Race report and results - 10th April 2025 - ‘50’s & 60’s Monsters vs Minis’

.
Ed turned up with a very tasty lemon drizzle cake…not much later Gav turned up with two boxes of assorted cakes as it was his birthday this week but he couldn’t stay.  Thanks guys, the cakes were very tasty.
.
Six racers turned up and we saw a few new cars to this event.
.
It’s been ages since we last saw Mike’s Oldsmobile Toronado, it was great to see it in action again and it went better round by round as the tyres started to polish on the track.
Mike’s ‘mini’ was his favourite metallic red Moggy Racer and goes well.
.
Another of Mike’s cars has been in hiding for many months, Kev’s resin cast Jaguar Mk7, this one has an Andy’s chassis and after a bit of googling the winner of the 1956 Monte Carlo Rally was copied…in Kev’s favourite black.  It’s been seen recently in testing and a gear change sees it now reaching it’s true potential.
Kev was seen trying out three different Minis and ended up with the one he first built a chassis for when the club was at the airport.  This has a PCB chassis and goes well.
.
The bravest man tonight was Chris who raced an out-of-the-box Mini Cooper (not one of Ed’s out-of-the-box full modified jobbies), tiny narrow tyres and its manufacturers magnet; it's actually a nice little runner.
Chris’s ‘monster’ was a rather nice looking ‘69 Camaro, headlights ablaze going quite nicely for a B2B car.
.
Brian’s Monster of choice was a Pioneer Dodge Charger, it did sound a little ropey…then stopped during a race which brought out the yellow flag…the pinion had slid up the motor shaft and no longer making contact with the spur gear.  A swap for Andy’s huge Galaxie 500 put the smile back on Brians face as he enjoyed racing that.
Brian had more luck with his Mini Clubman.  There’s a few of these about on Wayne’s carbon chassis and goes well.
.
Andy forgot his usual Mustang so raced his quick door wedge aka Cadillac ‘Le Monstre’.  Definitely the fastest car down the main straight but big fast monsters require a lot of slowing down and accelerating…
…not a problem for Andy’s other car, a super fast 3D MiniSprint on one of his brass chassis which was easily the fastest Mini tonight.
.
Ed did consider racing a ‘69 Camaro, a green version of Chris’s but decided to stick with his 3D chassied ‘67 Mustang which goes really well.
Ed’s Mini Clubman is another of Wayne’s carbon chassis but this one is modified to take a long can motor and is one of the best handling Minis on the track (I drove it after working on it so I know).
.
So the end of another great night of racing, the computer was pumping out racing V8 sounds all night as drivers got better and better with quicker lap times.

.
Next week is Targa Florio, one car each (the car must have raced in the Targa Florio - see the list on the clubs FB page) - the equivalent of 3 minutes on each of our three Rally stages plus three rounds of racing on the main circuit.

Race report and results - 24th April 2025 - Group 5 followed by Small Sports/Saloons
.
It was Kev’s birthday, the goodies were very enjoyable.
.
Six club members plus a guest (John) enjoyed another evening of racing.
.
Group 5

.
Three Standard Class (Chris, Gav & Kev)
Three Modified Class (Andy, Brian & Ed)
…and a Club BMW (John)
.
We don’t see many changes in this class, most of us have a favourite (and a spare) but the racing is still good as these go pretty well on the track.

.
Small Sport/Saloon

.
A change in pace, John was warned not to expect the same performance and road handling as the wider Group 5’s…
.
We see quite a few different cars in this class despite it being one of the most challenging classes.
.
Andy’s Cooper Monaco (aka Shelby King Cobra) made a reappearance after a long layoff.
Kev raced his Ferrari 250 GTO 64 after a year (or so) of chassis builds/mods/tweaks/giving up/having yet another go at it…and it went OK.
Ed’s proxy Porsche 904 GTS was out in force.
Brian’s Ferrari 365P2 was going exceptionally well “why is it going so well tonight?”...”probably because you’re driving it properly” came the reply.
Gav raced a Targa Florio Proxy AC Cobra which went round the track nicely.
…and Chris was allowed to race a Camaro, he also lent John a Mustang.  Both cars results are separated from the Small Sports/Saloons results.

.
So the end of yet another great night of racing and looking forward to next week…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
Next week is Club BMW 320i followed by Grand Prix & Prewing F1
…a reminder that the GP cars will be scrutineered for overall width and tyre width.  Cars outside the class width limits will be classified as Open Class Prewing F1.
Race report and results - 1st May 2025 - Club BMW 320i followed by Grand Prix & Prewing F1
.
It was a lovely evening after a day of fine weather…but it still gets chilly in the evening as Kev found out when he realised he didn’t have a jumper to put over his T-shirt…a bright yellow hi-viz would have to do…”flippin’ ‘eck, health & safety gone mad…it’s only Slot cars” said Brian.
.
Only four club members tonight which meant 2+2, 2 drivers & 2 marshals per race.
.
Club BMW 320i (using club controllers)
.
OK, this isn’t everyone’s favourite class, little did we know we were in for a treat tonight…both watching and racing as there was some amazing racing and the marshals had very little to do all night.
.
Final results weren’t decided until the last lap of the last heat as Kev raced Brian, Andy leading overall and Mike second as the timer counted down and the laps counted up…Kev just nicked top spot at the checkered flag and Brian was oh so close to Mike for 3rd.
.
The most notable race was Heat #3 as Andy in Yellow lane and Kev in Blue lane.  Andy got off to a flyer and pulled the length of the main straight ahead of Kev by lap 5…at which point Kev started closing in again with both cars finishing the race three cars lengths apart.
.
Heat #4 was also good as Mike & Brian finished less than half a lap apart.
.
Kev’s best result was in Blue lane
Andy’s best result was in Yellow lane with the best lane score of the night
Mike’s best result was in Blue lane
Brian’s best result was in Yellow lane
.
Grand Prix & Prewing F1
.
How would we calm down after such great racing with the Club BMW’s…the narrow GP cars aren’t the easiest cars to race.
.
Looking through the results, in the final race of the night with Brian in Red lane and Andy in Yellow lane having more deslots (three each) than the rest of the nights racing combined.  This was costly indeed for Brian as it meant he lost out to Mike again for 3rd spot.
.
Andy was testing an Alfa Bimotore before the racing but he needs to narrow the tyres and track width so raced his trusty Ferrari 156.
.
Kev raced his trusty little Mercedes W165, a car built for the Mac Pinches Proxy that never happened due to covid and a nice runner.
.
Mike raced his favourite little Connaught, very consistent car with a best run in Blue lane.
.
…and Brian’s Vanwall, built many years ago and the only change since…a new set of tyres as the old ones were worn out, probably his most raced car (he’s got a Cartrix Ferrari to sort out).
.
So the end of an unexpectedly great night of racing and looking forward to next week…
Next week is Saloons followed by TV/Film cars
.
Before then though is the Saturday Scalextric Club from 10am to 12 noon, the only meeting we all use a magnet in the car.
