Shame there's not an easy way to translate PDF files, looks a good read (if you speak French)

Hi Qman,

I always use Google Translate to translate texts.
(My French, for example, is also very poor).
My method is to copy and paste the text I want to read into
Google Translate. You can't copy anything from some magazines,
but it's fine with the DRS magazine.
There is a max. file lenght of 10 Mb, so it is mostly impossible to
translate the complete magazine.

You, as a native english speaker could easily read the
Google translated texts and correct it eventually.

See also Woodcote's post in this thread :

As an example I have translated the editorial on page 2 with Google Translate.
I have corrected nothing in the English text...

Google translate can cope with 10MB, the current issue is 10.8MB

Hi Qman,

What I tried to indicate in my previous post is that I almost always translate a part or article of the magazine.
I only read/translate those articles that interest me. So it is never necessary to translate the entire magazine.
Then you almost never need 10Mb... And in many cases the pictures say a lot...

I'm only using a PDF reader so it's all or nothing

About Google Translate...

Hi Qman,

Yes, I also have Acrobat reader (on a Windows 10 machine) and no special software.
I'll tell you how I do this:
1 - Open the (complete) magazine (in this example DRS Magazine 12) with Acrobat reader
2 - Search and select the text you want to translate (in this example text from page 10)
3 - Place the cursor at the beginning of the text and press the left mouse button
4 - Pull down the mouse until the entire text you want to translate turns blue (color)
5 - Right click, a small window will appear and choose Copy and click left
Now you have copied the selected text...
6 - Start Google Translate, choose the language French for the French text and English in the right pane
7 - Right click and select Paste in the window
Now you have dropped the French text in the left pane and in a split second
the translated text appears in the right pane
If you want to keep the translated text, you can copy and paste it (as in point 4.5) in
        for example Notepad.

I hope this helps...

If anyone knows a better, perhaps a simpler solution, I'd love to hear it.

I use the Dutch version of Google Translate called Google Vertalen...

Thanks ePilot, I've found the problem, I use Foxit reader for PDF's (I got fed up with adobe wanting to do updates every 5 minutes), but Foxit doesn't give you the facility to copy text.
Downloaded acrobat reader and it works fine (now await the continual updates messages)

If you use chrome there is a better way. You can download the following extension, which allows you to select any text in a pdf, right click and choose translate. The translation appears in a pop up, which means that the original magazine, with the relevant photos, and the translation are both in the same window.

It's a lot easier.

Hi all,

The free January 2022 edition of Trackside Model Railroading magazine is available now...
Awesome scenery photos in this issue...
Trackside Model Railroading is published by Ross and Jenny Waters (About Us | Trackside Model Railroading)
A great model railroad magazine that comes out every month with a Free Edition (about 38 pages).
This magazine mainly consists of one or double page photos of beautiful layouts and not much text.
The paid Premium Edition now has 120 pages. Read online or download (pdf) this version of the magazine.
You can only read the free edition online. No download.
If you create a free account, you also have access to 2 previous free editions.
The current free edition is replaced by a new one on the 20th of each month.
The subscription to the premium edition of the digital magazine costs only $19.99 for one year.

Perhaps as a slot race hobbyist you can also get some inspiration or ideas here to incorporate into your track...
