hi guys
looks like i am delving into another rabbit hole !
and looking into gearing and ratio's
i understand the basics , but when i decide to buy a gear and pinion set i find there are different diameter pinions and gears especially with regards to anglewinder setups
i mistakenly thought all gear types would be a set diameter and the same for pinions
my question is :-
which size pinions to use with which size gears ?
example:-
if i wanted to use a nsr 16.8mm 30 tooth gear with a 10 tooth pinion what size pinion diameter ?
or an nsr 18mm 34 tooth gear with a 10 or 12 tooth pinion ?
why is nothing standardized in this hobby !!!!!!!!!!

Here is a thread on the topic in 'Tips & Tuning'...

NSR have produced a tuning guide for their products. It’s not comprehensive, but a good start:
http://www.nsrslot.it/assets/download/do...guide.html
The Pendles site is helpful - with each of the NSR gears, they give a suitable pinion size.

Perversely, I quite like the challenges presented by all of these incompatible manufacturer parts.
It provides a never ending task to find parts that play well together.

The hardest thing for me with gears is understanding how to select the correct pairing of gear diameters.
Any simple rules to follow...?
Brian,
Sorry it's taken a while for me to get to replying to this...
There is no universal and easy to use reference for pair matching.?
If only... but I don't have the inclination to create such a monster. ?
However, here are some clues
1. Inline gearing diameters
The diameter of an inline crown has no effect on the gear mesh.
2. Anglewinder and Sidewinder
Start by referring to the manufacturer web page and make some calculations.
NSR anglewinder: the recommended crown and pinion is 16.8mm & 7.5mm. (16.8+7.5= 24.3mm )
Slot.IT anglewinder : 15mm & 7mm or 16mm & 6mm (= 22mm )
If you want to use a pod from one manufacturer but don't want to use their gears, you have to find a pinion and crown that result in the same total
( +- 0.1mm )
Different manufacturers use different angles for their angle winder pods. (NSR 15°, Ninco 20° , slot.it 25°)
Match it if you can but it's nowhere near as important as hitting the right diameters.
Be aware that the boss on different manufacturers' crowns can be on opposite sides of the crown so ensure you select a gear with the same as the factory fit.
If you're dealing with a niche manufacturer's motor mount and cannot find the spec...
Good Luck! (You will need it)
I hope that is somewhat helpful ?

think i have got it
please correct me if i am wrong guys
inline :-
all pinions standard 5.5mm
crown gears increase in diameter with tooth number
side winder :-
6.5 or 6.75 pinions
spur gear diameter 18 or19 mm (tooth depending)
angle winder :-
same pinions typically as side winder
spur gear diameter 16.8 or 18 mm (tooth depending)
16.8 , fixing hub is towards the chassis and lower tooth gears
18 , fixing hub is towards the wheel and higher tooth gears
i think
comments please

Apart from inline crown gear, I follow the golden rule of...
Optimum tooth count = (gear diameter X 2) - 2
(With a +/- 10% flexibility in the tooth count if necessary).
Using this method for both pinions and spur gears, I get no whining from my drivetrain, which suggests to me good meshing and minimal power loss.

Inline & sidewinder... mostly, but there are exceptions.
Anglewinder... it depends on the manufacturer - the angles and pod layouts are different. NSR AW pinions are 7.5mm diameter, Slot.it 6.75mm (10T 6.5mm) - Sloting Plus make their own versions for both.
The Thunder Slot pod (not quite a SW, not quite an AW) takes 7mm pinions and 17mm spur gears. These are also plastic, which sort of hints at why there's no standardisation - each manufacturer is striving for extra performance to give their brand a competitive advantage...
