'Race-prepped' Scalex' Classic Mini update.
A £10 eBay buy, I started out by adding Pendle's own alloy wheels on the original axles, Mr Modifier's Urethane tyres on the rear and the original ribbed but ground down rears moved to the front. I also added the Union Flag roof sticker and B&W chequered headlight covers fron their sticker sheet.
The resultant 'part-Pendle-ised' Mini attracted so much attention and was so much fun to race I thought it deserved more.
First, glue the glass in place, then detail painting of the rear end. Humbrol silver for the all the rear body-coloured items that should be 'chrome'. The number plate light and boot lid handle were then given a further 'chroming' with a Molotow 1mm pen.
The taillights were then treated to Tamiya clear amber and red - two coats of each, leaving the 'chrome' rim showing - and the rear chromed foglights were also red tinted, whilst their mountings and the centre exit exhaust were given a touch of matt black. The tan plastic number plate was gloss blacked.
Pendle's racing numbers were added to the doors and the door handles treated with Molotow 'chrome' over Humbrol silver. I have the Pendle resin insets for the wheels but at the moment prefer the plain alloy look. The lime green 'Bell' helmets with black 'padding' represented show up a lot better than the original blue plastic - and the drivers look a bit healthier with their Revell Matt Flesh Pink colouring rather than the sickly wash over the blue that was applied at the factory.
With the bumper removed the grill was given a thinned black wash, the indicators painted silver then 'glazed' with tamiya clear amber. Windscreen wipers also got the Molotow treatment. The bonnet badge is gloss black with a fine line of Humbrol silver to represent the lettering. Pendle's B&W chequered spot light covers were added before the bumper was replaced. The front and rear bumpers remain removable for a 'different look' in different race classes though.
The interior was detailed a little too. Instruments added to the dashboard, the steering wheel rim painted matt black and the navigators notes added. Both drivers heads were removed for further detailing and the drivers fireproof suits detailed using decals. None of it will be noticable when racing but what the heck! I know it's there.
Finally, Pendle-isation was completed with their 20k Mabuchi motor, soft 'Racing' copper braid and a Scalextric Prosport(?) 9 tooth pinion. (The armature shaft had to be heavily 'knurled' with a pair of pliers to hold the pinion tight though.) Front tyres were 'glazed' with gloss black Humbrol paint and (Pendle, what else?) lead weight added underneath the driver platform, held in place with aluminium tape.
Fingers crossed I haven't spoilt the driving experience by overpowering it, or placing the weight too high up - but the lead can quickly be removed if needs be. (Initially I had lead taped to the underside of the motor but it proved TOO low on my only bit of track - an SCX terminal straight.)
Can't wait to give it a try next weekend!
