NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge 2025’ #1

   

The first of this years championship with these standard cars:

• Track reduced from 12V to 11V for this series (lap times are only marginally slower but deslots happen far less often)
  
• Cars are all the same except the paintwork
  
• Standard tyres, glued & trued...no additives allowed whatsoever, cleaning tape only
  
• No ballast allowed
  
• Damping tape allowed underneath the chassis (the same stuff we use to clean the tyres works perfectly - cheapest cloth/gaffer/duct tape you can buy)
  
• Original guide, motor, gears, wheels, interior, windows, screws, washers, spacers etc.
  
• The original tyres were replaced after 12 months for supposedly the same as originally supplied, i.e. Evo Supergrips and these are now into their third year of competition and shiny and grip is great on our painted (non-gritted polyurethane floor paint) wood track

The championship is no longer sponsored which means everyone is racing each other whereas the last two years we've had an official championship for those who are eligible (full club membership) but have yet to win it plus an unofficial non-championship for the sponsor and previous championship winners and guests.

The three quick guys in this series have consistently been Kev, Andy & Brian and tonight was no exception.
Brian has become the ‘Red lane king’ with these, how on earth he manages those lap times we’ll never know.  Andy’s secret weapon has long been Yellow lane and Kev somehow manages to find something extra in Blue lane.
.
Ed was rather out-gunned tonight but he’s still quick with his Club Challenge Mosler, it’s probably the quickest and most consistent car he owns.
.
The results chart shows the scores and championship points after round #1…one down, eight to go…anything can happen and probably will!

We started racing this ‘class’ last year which I feel has directly led to the start of the monthly ‘Saturday Scalextric Club’, more fun than serious racing.  Lap records have no place in this class, anyone can win, it’s all down to consistency and staying in the slot and the racing bonus laps will do the rest.
.
It was a bit of a shock driving these cars round after the intensity of the closely matched Moslers…settle down, concentrate on your own car, ignore the others and see how it all pans out.
.
How does this event work you might ask:

• Standard cars with original everything apart from a change of tyres which can be glued & trued…and of course a ton of lead.
  
• Bonus laps given for various ‘standard’ bits supplied by the manufacturer including lights.
  
• Bonus race laps depending on your cars fastest lap in each lane…go too fast and get no bonus laps, go too slow and you run the risk of being inconsistent but pick up more bonus race laps
  
• ‘Racing Specials’ aren’t banned…they just don’t get the various bonuses which is self discouraging.
  
• Bonus race laps started this time at 7.0 seconds ‘fastest lap in each lane’, this has incrementally increased each time we’ve run this class and originally started at 6.8 seconds.  Next time out it will be set at 7.1 seconds which means the faster cars will get no bonus race laps…or slow down!

OK, these aren’t ‘proper’ race cars, even so they’re rather addictive to race, slow, headlights glaring, unpredictable handling…but when lined up on the start line look great, thank you Scalextric!

A mix of Standard, Modified and Open class cars…and only one NSR Mosler…Brian’s Standard Class car which strangely isn’t as quick as his ‘Club Challenge’ Mosler but a couple of 31 lappers shows it’s quick and consistent nonetheless.
.
Two Modified Class cars, Kev’s Thunderslot McLaren and Andy’s Black Arrow Lamborghini (which is setup for the GT Global Challenge Proxy that starts in April) were neck-and-neck for the first 15 laps in the last heat.
.
Two Open Class cars, Chris’s Mack chassied Dome Judd and Mike’s eurosport chassied UOP DN4, there was very little between them but the Dome Judd was more consistent on the three lanes with Mike’s DN4 losing out in Red lane.

Four Standard Class NSR F1’s, the quickest of which has been Andy’s since day one and tonight was untroubled as Brian, Mike & Chris raced for the other two podium positions.
Brian’s three 30 lappers ensured 2nd spot overall whilst Mike & Chris finished about two seconds apart overall, this time with Mike finishing ahead of Chris.
.
The other F1 was Kev’s Modified Class SCX Minardi which finished somewhere between Andy’s and Brian’s NSR’s in the overall results.

Love them or loathe them…heat #3 was the best of the lot!...all three cars crossing the finish line within 1.5 seconds

• Yellow car is the nicest to drive with all the drivers managing their best score in that lane.
  
• The Blue car is probably the most consistent with Andy, Kev & Brian managing to finish on the same number of laps within 2 seconds of each other.  Chris lost a lot of time in this lane for some reason.
  
• The Red car caused most of us some ‘issues’ except Chris & Andy who managed good scores in that lane.
  
• Ed was very consistent in his three races, still managing a 6.6 hot lap and outscoring his own Group 5 Porsche that he raced in the next event.

Time for some faster action…although as it turned out…not much faster!
.
There was a funny smell in the air, a ‘very hot motor’ smell, which turned out to be mainly a club SCX Rally car that was being driven round one of the Rally stages by one of our young visitors tonight (more about that later)...but also Andy’s quick Capri that was behaving erratically…a drop of oil on the bearings seemed to help for one race but cursed the next one which brought out the yellow flags for a car swap.
.
Talking of problems, what was going on with Brian’s Capri, it’s been a rocket in the past, it was behaving very strangely, lots of controller twiddling and vented frustration but a couple of races later and it seemed to be getting there “I don’t understand it, it’s the settings on the label under the car…”
…a quick look at the last score sheet involving Brian’s Capri showed it had a NSR Shark 22…only now it’s got a Predator 22 and not the same performance.
.
Meanwhile, the big red Nissan Skyline of Chris’s has become a consistent good performer for him, it’s a big beast and struggled in Red lane but went well in the other two lanes and with one final heat could he catch Brian’s Capri after Brian had just posted his best lane score of the night in the previous race?...
…the answer sadly for Brian was yes as Chris also went on to score his best lane score of the night.
.
Ed’s Porsche is a nice little runner, usually struggling in Blue lane but tonight really got to grips with it by getting over a lap more than the other lanes.  It was seen after the racing was over being driven by a young newcomer who was going rather well with it.
.
Kev’s BMW M1 went well in Red and Yellow lanes but flew round Blue lane in hot pursuit of Andy’s BMW M1 in Yellow lane, resulting in both drivers managing their best lane scores of the night.

Going back to our three visitors tonight…
.
Matt used to race as a young lad when the club was in the Summerland complex, long since demolished and a few venues change for the club since…he brought his two young lads with him tonight and they did many laps with the club Rally cars on TT Grandstand and Little Druidale then had a go on the big track with Matt after we’d finished racing.  I have to say they were using the controllers really well, varying throttle and braking to suit…it won’t be long before they’re chasing the slower drivers!

Race report and results - 27th February 2025 - Italian Cars Team Race

Everyone brought at least two different Italian cars tonight…except Brian who only has one eligible car in racing fettle so he ran the SlotIt Maserati twice, in two different teams.
.
Although Ed had two different cars, he was allowed to run a Cartrix Grand Prix car and a Saturday Scalextric Club Ninco Lamborghini (with magnet) because a) He’d forgotten about his SlotIt Ferrari, and b) His other car had a gearbox failure.
.
Everyone ran 3 qually laps, the slowest qualifier had first pick of team-mate, next slowest had next choice and so-on until there were two cars left which happened to be Andy’s Thunderslot Ferrari 350 and Kev’s SCX Ferrari 550 Maranello at that point someone commented “that’ll be tough to beat!”
.
Racing was run in two halves, we raced our number 1 cars first then our number 2 cars but with the heat lineups changed.
.

There were some good races over the course of the evening and with no out-and-out racing specials it gave those racing slower cars a chance to enjoy their races.

With a Targa Florio Proxy coming up in Autumn, a couple of us chose to race those tonight, you just can’t beat proper competitive racing for testing.
Ed & Kev have both been working on Ninco Jaguar XK120’s…which just happen to be the same model, the difference is underneath, Ed’s is standard with a Pendle motor, Kev’s is a 3D sidewinder with a SlotIt 21k motor.  Both cars fitted with 8mm wide tyres and 1.5mm ground clearance for the proxy rules…and both cars lined up side-by-side in two of the heats tonight.
.
Mike’s ‘Moggy Racer’ was in action again tonight, as was Brian’s Ferrari 365 P2, both cars well sorted and both good runners.
Every time I see Mike’s Moggy I feel guilty for not getting mine finished and back on track as Mike’s is such a great looking car and looks great fun to drive…one day  ?
Brian’s Ferrari is a tough car to beat, extremely consistent and quick in all three lanes…one day he might get that Revoslot Alfa Romeo on four wheels instead of two and chance it in a race.

Andy brought a wide selection of cars for this event and really wanted to join Ed & Kev with his proxy build but he’s far from happy with it at the moment, the Ferrari 250 LM is a fantastic looker but seems to have a strange handling problem once the bodyshell is on the chassis.  Much swapping and changing of tyres, dremelling and tweaking with a few cars later he decided to race a Fly 250 GTO ‘proxy car’ with a 22k motor…only to find it has a Falcon motor and not eligible for the proxy…
…it was quick as expected.

NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge 2025’ #2

After the shock of racing slow cars then going to these rockets…we saw some magic tonight!
.
Kev finally managed to get his Mosler round under 6 seconds in Red lane at long last as both Andy & Brian have been doing for a while.
.
Mike’s last run was a shock…in a great way, flying round, managing a couple of 5.9 second laps, caught and passed Andy…then had a nightmare lap which included two deslots in awkward places, dropping into the wrong lane and losing over a lap in the process.
.
In Heat #4, Andy (in Red lane), Brian (in Yellow) & Kev (in Blue) lined up for what was the fastest race of the night as all three were tazzing round below 6 seconds, but lap #1 was strange, Kev running off at the start, Andy away from Brian then at the top of the hill Andy’s Mosler seemed to let Brian’s car past, whilst getting the video ready it was noticed that Andy’s car actually jumped out of the slot and heading into Brian’s lane just as Brian’s Mosler came up behind and shoved the wandering Gulf car out of the way and back into it’s own lane.
…Brian then thrashed his Mosler and was slowly catching Kev’s car until Kev found the ‘Blue groove’ then to his amazement, Brian was circulating in the 5.8’s for the first time since he last raced a Falcon car round BallaYorkley a few years ago.
…sadly to no avail as the nightmare first race in Red lane really caught the ‘Red Lane King’ out tonight.
.
Meanwhile, looking at the race data, Andy was Mr. Consistency, not the quickest in any one lane but put three scores together for runner-up tonight.
.
Ed drives his Mosler very well and his consistency is also good, it’s too bad that tonight four of the opposition were properly ‘on it!’
