Front axle was fine, no noise. The problem was a slightly deformed tooth on the crown wheel which had a bit of extra material on it from the moulding process. The complete lack of any factory applied lubrication didn't help matters either. As suspected one of the rear tyres was just fouling the rear arch as well. The wheel needed pushing in a tiny bit. Trimmed the errant tooth with a fine file, gave it the toothpaste treatment followed by some Parma lube and all is now well.
Scalextric certainly seem to have upped their game on the tyre front as the car has a reasonable amount of grip on my wood track, far better than previous purchases. I can now circulate in true Grant Williams style with just the right amount of throttle induced tail sliding! I will have to do something about the headlight brightness though to dim it down to Lucas Industries standard.
