Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - woodcote - 20th-Dec-23

Scalextric C4419 Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival 2021. RRP £49.99. Available now.

The Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 racer and Mk2 police car have hit the shelves just before Christmas. Both deserve to sell well as they are great subjects for slot cars and have been executed pretty well by the Scalextric team and the new factory in Vietnam...

I was kindly loaned a pre-production model (a final signed sample, the same as the production version) over a weekend in October, which was perfect timing for a trip to Goodwood. Although Grant Williams' BUY1 Jag has great pedigree in period (it came second at the 1959 Goodwood Easter Meeting, driven by Roy Salvadori) and has been raced at Goodwood Revival from 1998 onwards, it did not appear this September. That was because of this incident at the Festival of Speed in July...

I was marshalling about a hundred yards up the hill and those spectators were extremely lucky - the wheel just clipped the top of the hay bales, the impact throwing it up and taking away much of its momentum. Without that, the wheel would have entered the crowd at full speed and at head height. It was a freak accident, but Williams needed to be seen to have his wrist firmly slapped. Hopefully, this iconic car will be back at Revival in '24.

The Scalextric team were busy at Revival in 2021 taking pictures and colour swatches of the car - and the decoration is absolutely marvellous...

The mould is pretty good too, my only concerns being that the sides did bow out a little too much on my sample. Racers complain about tabs connecting body to chassis, but there is a sound aesthetic reason for them! The other aspect that doesn't look quite right to me is the central door posts, which look too wide between the two side windows - although it could be the dimensions are perfect, but a lack of pronounced panel lines gives us an unbroken patch of grey. A keen modeller can use a scalpel and an ink wash to improve that. Completely missing are front and rear quarter lights - not even a moulded line. I do think historic racers need these to look 100% legit.

Underneath, the car has a DPR hatch for easy conversion to digital, plus a cool ‘Jaguar’ cut-out over the in-line S-can motor. The guide is just ahead of the rear axle and there’s a traction magnet in front of the rear axle. I was surprised to find five body screws – although two of those are for the cockpit, which is independent of the body. The body itself weighs in at a svelte 21.9g, which will please racers looking to use a vac-formed tray interior. However, some work will be necessary to get a decent amount of body float – everything is rather tight, including a lot of excess spaghetti in the wiring loom.

On track, you’d hope those suitably skinny 6mm-wide slick tyres would offer up the sort of sideways action Grant Williams is famous for. With the magnet fitted, they don’t – the car is very nicely planted, but rolls when pushed too hard. However, with the magnet removed, the Jag is enormous fun! I needed to scuff up the tyres a bit to improve grip on Scalextric Sport track, but that was enough to get some great, controlled sliding action. The car is also very nippy and – with more work on the tyres and some well-placed ballast – I reckon the Jaguar will be a contender in the St Mary’s Trophy at our WHO/digital Goodwood Revival event in September. Fingers-crossed a new livery or two will appear in next year's line-up.

A big thank you to the Scalextric team for the loan of the sample. The BUY1 Jag is available from the Scalextric site here. An extended version of this review, plus a report from the 2023 WHO Goodwood Revival can be found in the November issue of Slot Car Magazine here. Merry Christmas!

RE: Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - CMOTD - 23rd-Dec-23

Mine arrived yesterday from Pendles. A few niggles apart from the missing front/rear quarter lights which featured on every 60s car so you could flick your fag ash out easily without winding down the whole window. Bigsmile

As they did extensive research on this one and the car is readily available for a full set of photos why did they put the registration number on the bumper instead of the plate in the middle? I have watched it many times at Goodwood and the reg plate is definitely in the usual central position.

Any idea what the two red bits underneath the front bumper are?

As has been pointed out elsewhere the car does not sit flat on the plinth for some reason, doesn't bother me as the car is for use on the track but the collectors won't be at all pleased.

Haven't been able to run mine properly yet because there is a godawful noise coming from the gears so, as usual, strip the thing down to fix the QC faults which should not be there on a £50 car. Tappingfoot Tappingfoot The rear tyres also seem too close to the wheel arches for comfort and no 60s car ever had headlights that bright!

Apart from that I quite like it, just need something to race it against now.

Cooling ducts for the brakes??

The number plate was on the bumper in that location at Revival 2021 (the exact livery reproduced) and was still there at FoS in 2023. Historic racing cars evolve, here at Brands in 2022…

The red things are air intakes, presumably for the brakes. They’ve been on the car (and bright red) for quite a while.

I stand corrected, although I am, of course, sitting down. Haven't been to Goodwood since Covid so didn't realise it had changed.

However..............compare the later photo to the Scalextric version. Wrong bumper - the Scalextric version still has the central number plate holder under the grille. The 2021/22 car is missing it and therefore has a different bumper to the slot car.

RE: Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - Mr.M - 28th-Dec-23

Brian, before you go removing the gears, just spin the front wheels. That was the noise on mine, unbelievably.

Mine was waiting at home last Thursday when I got in, so I had time to remove it from the case and add to my car case to take to the club. It was leaning over in the case which looked odd.

At the club, onto the track and what a noise! I immediately thought that the angle the car was sitting at in the case had dislodged the rear axle and the gears were not meshing. Our club tuning master was trying something out on the track and said that it sounded like the front axle needed lubrication. It seemed to be the sort of noise that was much worse than something so simple could produce. But, sure enough, I took the car off the track and spun the front wheels and the noise was from the front axle.

Body off, and a bit of teflon lube in the front axle holder and the noise was gone and the car was smooth running.

Great job by Scalextric - I've been banging on for years on the various forums that the Jaaaaag needed doing, so I am very pleased that we have finally got one.

RE: Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - CMOTD - 29th-Dec-23

Front axle was fine, no noise. The problem was a slightly deformed tooth on the crown wheel which had a bit of extra material on it from the moulding process. The complete lack of any factory applied lubrication didn't help matters either. As suspected one of the rear tyres was just fouling the rear arch as well. The wheel needed pushing in a tiny bit. Trimmed the errant tooth with a fine file, gave it the toothpaste treatment followed by some Parma lube and all is now well.

Scalextric certainly seem to have upped their game on the tyre front as the car has a reasonable amount of grip on my wood track, far better than previous purchases. I can now circulate in true Grant Williams style with just the right amount of throttle induced tail sliding! I will have to do something about the headlight brightness though to dim it down to Lucas Industries standard.

RE: Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - Savage GT - 29th-Dec-23

Chances are they are too white too, Mix some yellowy beige and clear 50/50 and brush over the LEDs, that should dim them some. If not enough, give it another coat until you are happy.

RE: Scalextric Jaguar Mk1 - BUY1 - Goodwood Revival - Top Down - 30th-Dec-23

Tamiya do several translucent tinted paints - yellow, amber, red, blue, smoke and maybe more since I last looked.

These are good as you can build up layers to get to the look you want and they're very quick drying between coats too.

That's a very clever solution,  thanks Top Down.
