Race Report
Seventeen of us ventured to the Barn as Storm Ciarán approached the south coast. We welcomed Kevin and Ozzy for their first taste of HO club racing - and we welcomed back Darren, Gareth and Dylan for the first time since 2020. Three Nascar championships were up for grabs, but with no Walkers and no McCanns on the grid, Terry only had to finish eighth to overhaul Oliver and win the big trophy. It was much closer for the junior title - Ollie leading Isaac by just one point. And in Gen6, anything could happen... Kev and Ash were locked into the winner-takes-all championship shoot-out, with tonight's Gen6 winner also certain to qualify and Rob looking safe for the fourth spot on points.
As advertised, the 2023 WHO AGM lasted no more than 5 minutes, with everything you need to know in this thread. There was a big round of applause for everyone who has kept the club racing this year, after the three tricky years during the pandemic. And then it was on to the racing...
Daytona Beach proved exciting. The tight entry to the South Bend certainly made the inside yellow lane tricky, but the unusual geometry of the North Bend required equally precise braking. Marshals at both ends of the track were kept busy...
Despite their rustiness, both Darren and Gareth were on top form in the opening heats. Andy wasn't far behind and Terry looked on course for the B final qualification that would guarantee him the Nascar championship. Debutants Ozzy and Kevin were quickly learning the ropes driving the club cars, given plenty of advice and assistance by more experienced racers...
The second pair of heats saw Terry jump up the order with a huge 41.7 lap score in blue. Andy faltered and the championship was Terry's - qualifying third behind Darren and Gareth. Deborah was top Gen6 runner, but still had work to do to clinch a shoot-out spot. Ollie out-qualified Isaac and Ozzy finish above Kevin in the battle of the first-timers...
