WHO Racing September 2022 - Formula One
#2

Race Report Part 1 - Qualifying Heats

Twenty-three of us took to the grid for an exciting evening of WHO F1 racing. It was excellent to greet Franco, Oliver and Marios for their first visits to the Barn - we'd met them at the High Salvington Windmill event, so they weren't entirely new to slot car racing. Indeed, it was a young and fresh-looking grid. Of the twenty-three, just Stephen, Mike, Daniel and me were veterans of 2010, Deborah, Keith and Ash had joined the club in 2014, Aiden a little bit later - and then everyone else was of the 2017 AFX generation or newer than that. Kevin, Isaac, Ollie, Franco, Oliver and Marios have all started racing with us since we returned in April. It's wonderful to see how the club has evolved.

The Zandvoort-inspired track had been modified slightly in its construction - tightening the final corner, which required some caution - especially in the inner white and blue lanes. With a huge lap length and a massive main straight, the layout looked great and was a nice challenge for both the Mega-G+ cars and the Classic Cup brass-weighted Vipers that were run by Mike, Stephen and myself. Terry was the sole Super-G+ competitor, having no choice with his Mega-G+ expiring in June.

The heats were really-exciting, giving us some close races - none closer that Heat 7, when Keith and Kevin finished side-by-side on 19.10 laps...

Jerome was in a class of his own at the top, no-one getting anywhere near him. At half time, he was two and a half laps ahead of his dad, who led the leading pack...

In the second pair of heats, Jerome pulled another two laps - claiming pole by 4.4 laps. Behind our club championship leader, Pete held on to second spot, but the gaps were incredibly close right through the field - Ash beating Alan by just 0.05 of a lap for twelfth place! The brass cars filled the bottom three places and would be first up in the finals.

In the meantime, here are the heat scores for you to study...
