53mm across the arches, even quite thick mould should leave 49-50 to outside of tyres at least.
That's not unreasonable, about where the Scalextric cars are, and as mentioned racing each other will make for a nice trio for your track
A bit of practice and you will soon get the hang of making them thinner I am sure. There is always the Dremel to help out
