Not a photography site, so why do I post?
#11

I spent the best part of an hour this morning trying to compose a post along the lines of Jason's.  He has put it far better than I ever could.

There are people who take snapshots (me, for instance), and there are photographers.  Doug's photography is on a much higher level.

Best regards,
Stuart.

Doug

Whilst I probably don't contribute to your threads very often, you are always in my mind when I take snaps to illustrate messaged I post elsewhere.

So rather than go for the standard poses, I'm always try to filk the frame whilst thinking "What would Doug do...?'

Not these in anyway could be mistaken for one of tours!

I love puttering with gears

Yes, I take snapshots too, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Photos are essential and a snapshot is better than no shot, way better. How else would we show somebody in a different part of the world, something we can't explain? How would forums or facebook survive without snapshots?

The next level up from snapshots, I'd say would be the photographers who shoot for, say Slot.it, who do a very good job of presenting their products totally professionally and clearly for us, their customers. But they have a very particular job to do, and it doesn't include being creative.

There are quite a few creative photographers on facebook, who I try to feature in the Digest. I like Mamoru Teranishi's photos where he takes his slot car out for lunch, or poses it in front of the Japanese cherry blossoms. Sven Hoffman takes some great track based shots, and A Lot Slots too. Here on the forum Rallyhub takes some great track based photos.

But Doug's photos are for me the perfect balance between a perfectly professional approach with really high standards, but with those added elements of creativity, striking drama, and a love for the car he's shooting that you don't often see. Just my opinion.

Doug is also kind enough to share his craft. I've been his humble student for a little while. However, I'm still in training. My pics don't compare to Doug's.

Well, those responses are unexpected, and very much appreciated!  I bought my first camera from a junkie in San Francisco in 1971...I knew it was hot, but I was young and foolishly didn't care.  Thanks to all of you for the kind words...usually there are no responses to any of my work.  I am in a bit of a drought these days...hard to come up with something that I haven't already done...such is the life of a slot car guy!!!  Thanks again gentlemen...really appreciated!

I know the feeling. I haven't seen a car that says 'make me' for ages. No doubt I will annoy Ronnie with some shavings and sawdust in due course.

Your photos are the best I’ve seen in the slot car world. Please don’t stop.

Bravo Jason. Very well said.
Doug I have been admiring your photos since I found Slot Forum back in 2009. So much so I bought a whole slew of Sideways Porsches because of your photos. Any manufacturer you have photographed should be paying you a commission IMHO.
Thank you.
