DiSCA Le Mans 24hrs 9th Edition 2-3 April 2022
#71

Hotlap Phil is 10 laps behind the leaders Olifer...who are in the pits!

Earlier, the Olifer stopped right in front of the Worthing marshall. He took it off the track and called for them to come and check it over.

"Put it back in the track!!!" came the shout back from the Portuguese team.

"Ok" says our Marshall "but its on fire..."

Yes, and bravo Phil's team for winning the Spirit of Le Mans award as well.

We came here after one previous entry, so we're light on experience but full of ambition. This time round we had a car that ran well throughout, and only had the usual minor items that need attention crop up, so had to replace worn braid a couple of times, and adjust the pinion once. But that was really a reflection of the hard work from our tuning department (Mike) who built on everything we learnt from the time before. He also put himself at the service of the race drivers throughout Friday practice and was kept busy tweaking the gearing and the like to get the best out of our handout motor.

So here is our LMP2 car after the race, looking, I think it is fair to say, the same as when it did before the start...

So little things like the carefully crafted rubber mirrors and front winglets all still intact!

The organisers kindly cloned our five individual SCP2s during practice so we could all plug an play with our own controllers on each driving stint without having to use the previous drivers settings or reset it to your preference. That worked faultlessly.

I had made up about ten different driver rotation plans, but we kept a simple rotation pattern and all took it in turns and just varied the length of each stint to suit the time of day (and night!) and sleeping patterns. One team maxxed out their best driver at the 14hr limit, but this event caters for all types.

Some random memories for me as a first time entrant were...

Meeting people in the flesh who I have chatted with on here, and being reminded that it's real people out there, not usernames.

I often ended up next to many of my slotting heros on the Marshall posts, and each time they were happy to answer all my nieve questions with lots of great advice.

Seeing the enthusiasm in Maurizio Ferrari, and what a honest guy to show up at an event like this built around the hardware and software his company produces. At one point he was driving next to me on the rostrum and I followed his car for half a lap before his LMP1 headed off down the Mulsanne Straight. A team mate of mine came up to me soon after and said I had just done a good lap. In a stage whisper I said it was because I had been following Maurizio but had not managed to keep up, to which Maurizio turned and said "ha ha, don't follow me, but what is it people say....'Eat my Dust!"

Gary and Alex from DiSCA (with the occasional assistance of Maurizio) working together to make the event possible. I went up to them at one point to thank them with "it's 4.30am in the morning, it's pitch black, and we are all playing with slot cars. It doesn't get much better than this!"

So to finish off, here it the official Worthing Digital team photo (stomachs in gentlemen...)

Thank you Ed, Jean, Mike and Alex!
