Not knowing quite how your builds end up I have to ask, Will this be the finished product or will it be used as a mould to produce a resin (or similar) bodyshell?
If it is the latter can I join the queue for a copy please

Modeling is the part I like, I try to stay away from too much moulding and casting.
I normally make only one of a kind.
I'm sorry, it is not very likely there will be a production...

Having come this far with the piece of wood I have to use other materials to get the forms more precise.

Next will be the side screen frames, which will be more complicated. I want the screens to be almost in level with the body, I don't like them to sit deep.

I have hollowed the shell out. It weighs only 11g, but then it is a very small car.

Hi Tibbs,
Much of this is common, but small-scale wood-crafting... Drilling and using a small chisel works fine for hollowing out any sort of wood!

I must point out again that I am not using soft balsa, I use the harder lime tree/basswood.
I've used the Makita belt sander seen in some pics in the Lotus thread( a better variation of the more common Black&Decker Powerfile) to hollow this shell out. Any of those machines would be overkill for balsa work, I think.
You get by with very simple tools!

Why don't you just get some pieces of good wood, start working and see what happens!

I am sure you have looked around and found Gordon Steadman's (the balsa boy) ”Building a slot car body out of wood” thread on this forum?
His ”I'm into bodies” should be interesting for you as well.
There is a lot to pick up from older threads.

Yes indeed...that's 'cos they ain't!

The three of them are on the way to the UK for someone to make some resin moulds for me. I always intended to do it myself but realistically, I won't get around to it now. It's been a while now with no confirmation they have arrived so I have my fingers crossed. It'll be annoying if they go missing but not the end of the world.
