Chip Repaired and a Big Thankyou
#1

I just had the thrill of running one of my Scalextric digital cars around my track after replacing two of the chips components!
This was my first successful repair of a 8515 style digital chip.
After replacing the two components I thought it would be an absolute miracle if this chip would be functionable. I'm not at all schooled on electronics and only have some crude soldering tools and skills, so this was a huge suprise when the car ran and changed lanes and speeds through my contoller.
I had tried to repair a 7005 chip prior to this without success, and am pretty sure I damaged the PCB beyond repair, so I wasn't very confident about repairing this one.
I want to give a Big Thank You to Dr_C, for his advise and help with this. He is a wonderful member of this forum and a valuble contributor and enthusiast to our hobby. Thank You, Dr_C.

There's plenty of advise freely available with pics on the Web of how to achieve the desired results  Wavegreen.

Even if you've damaged the pcb this may under certain circumstances still be repairable  Thumbup

Congrats on the repair  Thumbup

Hey Zippideedooda, great to hear the repair worked out well - well done!

Meanwhile for anyone interested in giving it a try, here is some guidance:

https://slotracer.online/community/showt...2#pid35192

In my experience about 90% of failed SSD C8515 decoders can be repaired simply by replacing both of the drive MOSFETs. One controls power to the motor and the other controls braking. Quite often if one fails it causes the other one to fail too - hence the simple repair strategy to replace both.

With SSD decoders costing upwards of 15-20 GBP to replace, the case for repair is getting ever stronger :)
