I don't know about motor upgrades, because I stick with SCX RX- motors.
I've had two Escort Cosworths, and still have one. In my opinion, it's one of the best handling SCX 4WDs. I run mine magless, with weight behind the guide, and urethane copies of the original tyres.
Best regards,
Stuart.

As per previous responses, what is your aim for the car?
Any car has a certain performance envelope based on its geometry and mechanicals. You could put a more faster motor in it but all you might end up doing is having to drive it at the same pace as before to avoid it tipping over on every corner.
In my limited experience of rally cars, it you want a truly fast one, buy a SRC. But I also have some SCX and Ninco 4x4 rally cars in their original spec, save for some softer tyres and some ballast, and they can show an impressive turn of speed once you get the tuning right and bed in all the gears.
I love puttering with gears

Yeah SRC are a quick way to get a competitive car but you can make others at least as competitive. At our round of SRGB my 3D chassied Scaley TR7 with original windows and no lightening of the bodywork was more than a match for the 914's on all but the Ninco track.
As far as SCX only cars, a well setup Xsara WRC pro car is as good as NSR's Avants or SlotIt's.
If you're competing against other SCX cars besides the Xsara, I like the Seat Cordoba but it could do with a SCX pro rally motor as the kit one is sluggish...or remove some of the windings to give it some more rpm.
The #1 thing over and above all else that I hate is the chicken leg guide setup and the amount of excess sideways wobble of the guide and it's not easy to replace with a decent guide.
If you're driving without magnets then I find SCX Rally cars need more ballast than other makes.
