ballanced motors
#1

Hi can someone explain about ballanced motors & thier benefits. Are they much better than a non ballanced motor?

Hello Bowley,...........balanced armatures, spin more smoothly, (less vibration)   and therefore place less strain/wear on the motor bushings, which usually also results in a slightly quicker spinning armature/motor.

There are two common methods of balancing an armature......Static and Dynamic, the actual balancing is done by either adding a bit of epoxy to one or more of the armature poles, or by removing weight (drilling some small holes in the armature laminations. The more high end motors (100K RPM + used for Commercial track racing) are Dynamically balanced, and the weight is removed via holes drilled in the stack/arm laminations,.....this is the most precise/best performance way to do things, but certainly costs more than a Static/weight added balancing.

The motors that most use in club/home use (NSR/SCaley/Slot-it etc.) are mass produced (wound) on some fairly accurate machinery, and while they are far from perfectly balanced, at the speeds that most of them spin (10/30 ish K), the cost of balancing would far outweigh the performance benefits in these rather crude little motors, with their far from high quality comms. and brush gear.

Thank you mate now I understand. I love modifying stuff including slot cars but don't want to do it for tiny gains. Chears

As Charles Bronson (Harmonica) said in the film 'Once Upon a Time in the West'..."Only at the point of dyin', Frank"

Slot car tuning is a bit like that, the final final FINAL bits like balanced motors, gears and wheels come when everything else on the car including your driving...is perfect.

Life is like a box of Slot cars... Cool Drinkingcheers
