Race reports - 6th January - Club Revoslots + Club BMW 320i

The start of a new year and the start of a new look race calendar.

This year we’re mixing two club class races numerous times this year, tonights mix was Club Revoslots followed by Club BMW 320i’s

Using club controllers was optional, two drivers used them.

Club Revos…great race cars, the tyres have polished rather than worn and although they are basically exactly the same car, all three have their own personality.

The Marcos in Yellow was everyone’s quickest car on a hot lap and race pace except Mike B who’s best race was the blue Dodge Viper.

Kev seemed to have a good advantage with the Marcos and Viper but the races with the red Porsche were very close.
2nd to 4th was very close as Chris, Geoff & Brian finished overall less than 0.4 of a lap.
Although Mike managed the 2nd fastest hot lap his overall race pace was a little off the three ahead.
Ed is getting better each week, racing himself rather than cars that go past, the gap to the cars ahead will start to reduce this year as he becomes more consistent.

Club BMW 320i’s…new motors, NSR Shark 25’s…but they really need new tyres and one has a damaged pod, nevertheless a 6.2 in Blue shows how quick these are.

It was close at the top, Brian could have won with a 27 lapper in his last race…in Yellow…with a car that was suffering most with grip…in fact he was top scorer in both Red and Yellow…but Kev does like Blue lane, with the only 28 lapper all night.

Geoff & Mike were also having a super close night, Geoff quicker in Red, Mike quicker in Yellow (as Geoff had a bit of a ‘mare) with next to nothing between them in Blue.

Chris who was flying with the Revos couldn’t keep up with the guys ahead whilst Ed finished a lap closer with the BMW’s than the Revos and said he enjoyed them more than the Revos.

Race reports - 12th January - Small Sport/Saloons + Group 5

Small Sports/Saloons

A few regulars not able to get down tonight due to work, travel or prior commitments but it was great to see Gav back after breaking his arm and it didn’t take long for him to get back up to speed. His AC Cobra was involved in two close races against Geoff’s AC Cobra, with Geoff winning Heat #5 but Gav getting revenge in the final Heat #7…but both way off the pace of another Cobra…Andy’s King Cobra (Cooper Monaco).
Geoff’s Cobra has a motor change, a 19k Pioneer, although looking very smooth he said it wasn’t enough for him, no doubt it’ll be returning to the garage for a power boost.

Brian may have pensioned off the Big Healey which he’s raced for the last 5 years in this class, his Ferrari 355P2 with the wheels/tyres off the Healey was flying round, easily the quickest car he’s ever driven in this class, a low 6.7 sec hot lap is quick!
His first win was Heat #3 racing Geoff’s Cobra whilst his closest race was Heat #6 against Kev’s Alfa, the Alfa finishing a couple of seconds clear after both cars needed help from the Marshals.

Kev’s Alfa GTA, one of a great range of cars from Revoslot perfect for this class and easily the best cars you can buy for Small Sport/Saloons without resorting to modifying or making something competitive…a 6.6 second hot lap is very quick.

Andy’s closest race was Heat #4 against Kev’s Alfa, the King Cobra needing help from the Marshals a couple of times which cost the race win. Despite that the Cobra was easily the quickest car on the track.

Heat wins in heat order for Andy, Kev, Brian & Geoff

Group 5

There’s not a great deal of difference between the quicker cars in all three classes.  Three BMW’s and a pair of Capri’s.  Although any car in this class goes better with a sidewinder setup, the standard anglewinder cars can give the modified and open class cars a good race as we saw as a Standard Class car win Heats 1,3 &5.

Heat #2 was the closest finish as Andy’s BMW finished 4 seconds ahead of Brian’s Capri.  Andy’s Open class vs Brian’s Modified class car was probably the best race all night as the Capri was quicker but couldn’t get past the BMW without going off the track.

Despite a healing broken arm, Gav got better through the evening, his last two races saw the Capri fly round once the controller sensitivity was set to suit the car.  Heat #3 in Yellow was his best race, finishing less than a lap behind Kev’s BMW.

Geoff & Kev have been regulars in the Standard Class, BMW M1 vs BMW 320i but they didn’t race each other until the final heat, a heat that was won by Brian with his quick Capri.

Race reports - 19th January - Saloons + Sports

Saloons

A good mix of cars and the best racing was for 2nd spot in a couple of heats. Heat #2 saw Chris (Opel) & Brian (Opel) on the same lap whilst Geoff’s Opel cleared off.  Heat #5 saw Mike H (Camaro) & Ed (Merc) finish less than a second apart whilst Geoff’s Opel again won the heat by a fair margin.
Geoff, Brian & Chris were the midfield, this has been the case for a while now and where the closest finishes were tonight.
Andy’s Peugeot 406 was the quickest car on the track, the closest competitor was Kev’s Opel.  Both can be seen in Ed’s video on the club's FB page.
Someone commented how well Mike’s Camaro looked in practice, sadly the inevitable Murray Walker moment came to fruition during the racing.  Red lane costing Mike a better result, those tight bends catch a lot of drivers out.
Ed’s Mercedes was in Red for Heat #1…a difficult lane to start the evening, too many costly deslots kept the Merc in last place overall.

Heat wins in heat order for Chris, Geoff, Andy & Kev

Sports

Lap times tumbled as the quick cars started circulating, NSR Moslers leading the way in Standard class, Kevs copper rocket leading the charge with a new track race record.
Brian & Geoff lapping at the same pace but Brian managed a little extra on the track.
Ed & Mike had two super close races this time, both less than a second apart, both drivers bagging a 2nd place.

No Modifieds this week but a couple of Open class racers, Andy’s Porsche and Chris’s Dome Judd, the Porsche not really liking Red lane whilst the Dome Judd was very consistent with three similar scores.  Andy almost got a 30 lapper in Yellow, it’s a car you’ll really struggle to get past in the race.

Heat wins in heat order for Chris, Kev, Andy & Geoff

Last night turned out to be the perfect opportunity to award ‘The 50p Trophy’ as Chris, Brian & Geoff chased down 3rd spot overall in the Sports race.  With 4 laps to go Chris was 3rd overall as Geoff led the race ahead of Brian…as those laps were counted down…3 to go, Chris still 3rd…2 to go Brian now 3rd and Chris 4th…last lap…Brian 3rd, Geoff now 4th…Chris 5th.  So the inaugural awarding of ‘The 50p Trophy’ goes to Brian for a great close finish to the evening's racing.

Race reports - 26th January - GP/Pre-wing + Classic F1/F1

GP/Pre-wing

Almost a full house tonight, a class that is great to watch but difficult to race in as the cars and tyres are narrow and have a fair bit of ground clearance which means a fair amount of work for marshals.

Ed opted out of this class last time but tonight borrowed an Alfa Romeo Bimotore but had to drive it carefully as it was powered by a Falcon motor, he was under strict instruction that if it was returned in more than one piece then he’d have to buy it..he did OK with it too.

Geoff has struggled with the Talbot Lago for a while…the problem discovered after a dramatic crash under the bridge in which the driver was fatally injured…he should recover enough to race again in a few weeks time, this time sitting above the motor and not on it!

Gav was back with his favourite (and rather rapid) Lancia Ferrari, Chris racing his tried & tested Maserati that was noted for being a bit quick! that had a close battle for top spot in Open GP class against Mike’s Merc W196.

Brian racing old faithful Vanwall can be guaranteed to give anyone a race in the Modified GP class, Kev raced one of Mike D’s Mercs with a 3D chassis and was under pressure after racing in Red with a few deslots.

Andy’s Ferrari 156 was the quick car on track tonight, although the only car in it’s class was never really under pressure in any race.

Heat wins in heat order for Mike, Andy, Kev & Brian

Classic F1/F1

Standard F1 = NSR F1…a perfect chance for another ‘50p Trophy’ award

Andy’s was the quickest NSR F1 by some margin…but the race for 2nd-4th promised to be tight, this was to be between Brian, Geoff & Mike…yes at last Mike’s fabled NSR F1 was revealed in blue Leyton House livery.  Chris wasn’t able to keep the pace of the three cars ahead but his run in Blue showed much promise.
Brian, Geoff & Mike all finished less than a lap apart with Brian retaining the ‘50p Trophy’ for the second week.

Gav raced the other NSR F1, his run in Red was as good as the two cars ahead in the Standard class but three big deslots in Yellow left him well off the pace.

The other two cars were in the Open class, Kev’s ‘Black Bull’ as quick as ever but couldn’t get past Andy in Heat #2, Kev in Red, Andy in Yellow…the other Open class car was Ed’s Ferrari he last raced just after Christmas, too much time driving his Batmobile instead of practising with the cars raced tonight meant a slower time than last time out.

The last heat of the night was close as Mike, Chris & Geoff finished less than two laps apart.

Heat wins in heat order for Brian, Andy, Kev & Geoff

A BIG shout out to Chris as the infrared heaters he fit to the walls earlier in the evening made a big difference to the room temperature, one or two racers were seen taking jackets off for a change.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next week is the first NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge’, all cars have new braids and tyres, Brian, Kev & Andy kindly getting the cars ready for what will hopefully be another season of close racing.

Race reports - 16th Feb - Small Sports/Saloons plus Group 5

A great turnout tonight with eight club members.

SMALL SPORTS/SALOONS

All the cars made their first appearance in the heats below

Heat #1 - Gav (AC Cobra) vs Ed (Metro 6R4) vs Mike B (Moggy Racer)
Heat #2 - Chris (Abarth A110S) vs Andy (Merc 300SLR) vs Geoff (Jag XK120)
Heat #4 - Kev (Chaparral 2C) vs Brian (Ferrari 365 P2) vs Chris

Up to the end of 2022 the two quick cars were raced by Andy & Kev, this year however Brian, Chris and Geoff have had serious upgrades for 2023.  Brian & Chris are now in the mid 6 second lap times, Geoff’s Jag isn’t quite as quick but knocking on the door of sub - 7 seconds.
Ed was racing his own car in this class for the first time, a rather quick Metro 6R4.

Heat #3 was close, Mike B and Gav with the AC Cobra finishing 0.2 of a lap ahead.
Heat #4 saw Brian’s Ferrari finish less than a lap behind Kev’s Chaparral.
Heat #5, Kev’s Chaparral finishing less than a lap behind Andy’s Merc 300SLR.
Heat #6, Gav’s Cobra finished less than a lap behind Mike’s Moggy Racer.
Heat #7 was close for 2nd spot as Chris’s Alpine A110S was just over one second behind Brian’s Ferrari 365 P2.
Heat #8 had Brian’s Ferrari finish just over 4 seconds behind Kev’s Chaparral.

As far as classes were concerned, Mike & Kev were the Modified Class entrants whilst the rest were all Open Class entries.

Class wins in heat order for Mike B, Andy, Gav & Kev

GROUP 5

Heat #1 Chris (Nissan Skyline) vs Gav (Capri) vs Ed (Porsche 935)
Heat #2 Brian (Capri) vs Kev (BMW M1) vs Geoff (BMW 320i)
Heat #4 Andy (BMW M1) vs Mike B (Capri) vs Brian

The only real change here was Kev’s BMW going back to the Modified Class with a SlotIt pod and NSR motor.

Ed managed much better with the Porsche, finishing on the same lap as Gav’s Capri in two heats and within a couple of seconds.

Heat #4 Andy’s BMW M1 finished less than a lap ahead of Brian’s Capri.

Although Small Sports/Saloons results weren’t closely fought, Group 5 were very close as Chris & Geoff in Standard Gr.5 were only 0.02 of a lap apart at the end of the racing which is about three cars lengths or 0.14 seconds.  Chris with the quicker hot lap but Geoff’s median (middle of the overall results) lap time was quicker.

Modified Class was also close as Kev’s BMW finished 6.5 seconds ahead of Brian’s Capri but they both finished on the same lap in two heats.

Standard Class cars were Chris & Geoff
Modified Class cars were Kev, Brian & Ed
Open Class cars were Andy, Mike B & Gav (Gav’s Capri being in Open Class as it has a 32k motor and Modified Class motor limit is 30k)

Class wins in heat order for Chris, Kev & Andy

Next week is the first theme night of 2023 and is bound to be popular with Ferrari fans as it’s ‘Italian Car Night’ aka the Italian Job.

If you have more than one Italian car bring a few different ones as we’ll split the evening into two and run qually laps beforehand.

Race reports - 23rd Feb - The Italian Job - handicap race

A great turnout tonight with seven club members and over 20 Ferraris, Lancias, Lamborghinis and Maseratis seen during practice.

The idea of these theme nights is to give everyone a chance of the final overall ‘win’.  To do this everyone runs 5 qually laps in the red lane, each drivers best lap is used to calculate a ‘predicted score’ in a perfect scenario.  This will throw up unexpected results as it’s not necessarily the fastest car that wins, in fact the times we’ve done this in the past the fastest cars don’t win.

The racing was split into two halves with everyone except Ed running two cars and all but four cars were Standard Class cars.

Round 1

The close heat races were generally for 2nd spot:
Heat #1 Brian (Maserati) & Chris (Lamborghini) 3.5 seconds apart, Brian pinching 2nd place
Heat #3 Ed (Ferrari 412) & Chris (Lamborghini) 2.9 seconds apart, Chris finishing 2nd
Heat #4 Geoff (Lamborghini) & Ed (Ferrari 412) 3 seconds apart, Geoff getting 2nd spot
Heat #7 was the only close race finish for 1st place Kev (Ferrari 312) & Brian (Maserati) finishing 1.5 seconds apart, Kev winning the heat.

Heat wins for Andy, Kev & Geoff

Round 2

Heat #3 was close for 2nd spot between Chris (Lancia Stratos) & Ed (Ferrari 412) with Chris finishing 3.7 seconds ahead.
Heat #6 saw 2nd & 3rd placed cars finishing on the same lap as Geoff (Ferrari 512BBLM) finished almost a lap ahead of Brian (Ferrari 365)

Heat wins for Kev, Andy, Geoff & Brian

Despite one or two niggly problems and one or two cars losing body parts the racing was good fun and this event will return again on the 17th August
