SCX Hyundia i20 Coupé WRC
#1

Scalextric's last proper modern WRC rally car was the Rallye Monte Carlo 2015 winning Volkswagen Polo R WRC of Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia that appeared in 2016.
Since then, slot rally fans had to wait and wait and wait....
But this week the waiting came to an end with the new Rally Italia Sardegna 2020 winning SCX Hyundai i20 Coupé WRC of Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio.

In 2020, the Spaniards only took part in three WRC events.
After a breakdown with an overheated engine in Mexico, they were unbeatable on the Italian island, just like last year.
At Monza, the last WRC event of the season of only seven counting WRC rallies, they scored a fine third place.

It's impressive how SCX has handled the many aerodynamic parts on the body in such a solid way.
The Hyundai is only driven on the rear wheels by a FR42 motor, which is positioned as an inliner.
For the first test run it makes sense to glue the motor with hot glue first.
Here are a few pictures of the new SCX Hyundai World Rally Car:

Does this mean it's finally coming to the UK? I've waited a long time for this one. Looks really good in the photos.

I've been a big fan of SCX since I started this hobby almost 30 years ago. Their recent stuff has changed my opinion. Awful, cheap motor that, as Hub hints at, leaps out of it's mount the first time you hit the throttle in anger.

I had to have a Fulvia, but although it is the usual lovely model expected of SCX, the running of it leaves a lot to be desired. I also bought the latest livery Audi R8, much the same outcome. Not a patch on the earlier RK powered one.

Our newest club member bought the Audi S1 for our hot hatch class. I doubt he will buy another SCX car again.

I really feel sad having to write this about a slot car brand that I have enjoyed racing over so many years.

I've been in two minds about getting this car - partly the big price rise, plus the disappointing mechanicals of the new models (compared to the 'old' SCX cars) and then I didn't think the shape of the SCX i20 was right... However, Hub's pictures do present the car in far more flattering surroundings than a plain white background. And it's Dani Sordo...

I've always been a fan of Sordo and expected big things from him. It never quite happened, despite some excellent opportunities at Citroën and then Hyuandai. Being an 'elder statesman' with a part-time deal, a great car and beneficial starting position certainly seems to suits him now - as it did in Sardinia in 2020...

No sign of the SCX Hyundai in the UK... but when it does arrive, I might re-visit my previous decision. Afterall, this car is the most current WRC slot car model available.

Its not a very accurate model - it still has both door mirrors in place  LOL.

Gaugemaster pricing has rocketed and analogue SCX cars are £57.95 so I think I will stick with the 1:43 world for this WRC era.

Hopefully the current cars will be released in 1:32 before they become obsolete.

Thank you all for your response.

It's a real shame that SCX has sacrificed their well-functioning concept of the RX and RK series motors for the FR42 series with a shorter lenght, only to produce a digital version. Digital is nonsense for slot rally cars anyway, because only one car at a time drives a rally stage.
The lost of four wheel drive, the weight shift to the rear by the FR42 series motor with the construction for the digital ship in front of it, the guide height and tyres with less grip are all responsible for a deterioration in the handling characteristics. They should have left it as it was. Tappingfoot

I've measured the main dimensions, compared the car in photos and can only conclude that SCX was probably allowed to use the drawings from Hyundai.

Will it be available in the UK? It can be pre-ordered at Pendles:
https://www.pendleslotracing.co.uk/scx-h...sordo.html
£57.95x1.19=68.96 Euros is a lot of money. I ordered mine at Slotcar Union in France for 49.90 Euros (49.90/1.19=£41.93):

I hope my experiences with this WRC car are helpful to you.

Thank you Hub, for the extra info.

It looks great as a model and perhaps if I ever see them (the Audi S1 too) on special offer I will pick some up.

The Original version is at the moment out of stock.

The Original rally-cross Hyundai i20 RX driven by Gronholm and Timerzyanov cost £54.95 at Pendles.
