Sideways McLaren 720S GT3 White Kit & Painting Competition
#1

Race Sideways SWCAR04K McLaren 720S GT3 White Kit. RRP £62.95. Available early November 2021

The McLaren 720S GT3 is a great addition to the Sideways GT3 fleet. Most importantly, it's a car that's still widely used in GT3 championships around the world. The car made its debut in the autumn of 2018 and was available for customers from the beginning of the 2019 season. Carrera already have a 720S GT3 in their range, but the arrival of the Sideways model heralds the entry of a 1:32 720S into serious slot car GT competition.

As much as we can see from the white kit, the moulding looks great. It's a pretty low and sleek machine in real life, so no liberties of scale need to be taken. Underneath is the usual Sideways GT layout, with the anglewinder Baby Raptor long-can motor...

To introduce the new model, Sideways have launched an "International Painting Competition 2022 - 720S GT3". These are the rules...

Looks the business...but how fragile are those rear wing posts?

I love puttering with gears

If you keep the car in the box, they'll be fine. Take it racing and those posts might not survive very long...

Expect a rubber wing to be available separately for racers - the one for the Huracán was very wobbly, but does the job. Something a little more rigid - like the Slot.it 'tearproof' parts - would be ideal. Sideways did include a spare wing with some of their older Group 5 models. I like to think that 'tearproof' means the owner won't be balling their eyes out after a crash... but I'm probably wrong.

TBH it beggars belief that manufactures can't supply more flexible wings/struts from the off.
It is not like they dont know how to ... although the Sideways Lambo ones were too flexible.
Making aftersales parts at £5+ each and nowhere near enough to supply stockist with a good quantity is no substitute IMO.

The liveried cars look good, I'll be waiting on a nice livery version to be released before I consider exchanging any beer vouchers  Bigsmile

The fragility of rear wings drives me round the bend. It has got to the stage where I refuse to buy cars I might like because I know that the first crash will destroy them.

The answer for manufacturers is really simple:
1) make the struts a bit thicker than true scale. Purists might moan but most of us would be eternally grateful. Two wings as standard would be a suitable compromise, one for racing and one for display.

2) Don't glue or heat stake them in! Way back in the 70s/80s Scalextric rear wings were left loose so they fell out in an accident and rarely broke. If they got a bit too loose then Blu Tack would secure them sufficiently for minor offs.

That looks good, seems to have escaped the fate of the ford gte' huge wheel arch gap despite being similarly low profile at the back.

Wouldn't normally consider a white kit but my last couple of sideways gt3 purchases have had poor for and finish so might see if I can do a better job myself!
