Here are some pictures and hopefully not too long and boring description of my track! This very compact layout(bit less than 8x4 ft) was built at what can only be described as a glacial rate, with construction of the baseboards (it’s built in four detachable sections) began at the start of 2014!!
The boards are 12mm hardwood mounted on 2x1 frames with 2x2 legs on foldable hinges.
All the track is standard SSD parts with SSD borders and barriers, which were painted cut and generally modified where necessary. In order to ensue reliable running, particularly given the permanent nature of the layout, all the track parts have individual feeds soldered both across lanes and from piece to piece. All four sections of track feed into a central plug in board (under the grandstand). This belt and braces approach has avoided any voltage drops/issues. The albeit tiny pit lane has the pit lane challenge game track, with for the purposes of realism has the associated tower wired to a remote location on the side of the board.
The raised sections of track are supported on plywood bases, with the scenery built using constructed frames covered with Plaster of Paris bandage. A lot of time was given to the construction of scenic retaining walls and tunnel mouths from brickpapers and embossed plasticard, and the tunnels all have ‘walls’ made in the same method, and finally all illuminated with LED’s. The landscape after painting with Woodland Scenics grass colour, were then covered with various WWS static grass materials, and finally lichens and shrubs also from Woodland Scenics.
The overbridge is an Magnetic Racing model, that has been extended with an additional span and fitted with a revolving sign. Whilst the towers and walkways have been fully detailed with internal walls and ceilings with working lights and pictures and signage. Finally various figures were added.
All the other structures are scratch built again all illuminated with interior detail etc. Various other figures and details from the likes of Slot Track Scenics have been added round the board. Details such as a small flock of sheep complete with Shepherd in a field adjacent to the track in one corner, and little things like the construction of actual 3d advertising signs (the Pirelli and Heineken signs next to the pit garage) hopefully bring things to 'life'.
The whole premise behind the layout, obviously aside from racing, mostly with pace cars (so no curves less than second radius), was to apply a level of ‘model railway’ level of scenary. Of course, and particularly given the relatively large size of 1/32 scale, the very limited space available is going to lead to inevitable compromises in the overall levels of realism, but hopefully I have captured the ‘flavour’ of a real race track, and perhaps shows how something completely self contained can be built in a small space.
