Really like the new Group C liveries...

So what is the difference between the Slot.it and Policar brands?

Yes, some nice new liveries there. I'm a big fan of the Policar F1s...

Slot.it and Policar are brands of the same company (Galileo Engineering). Slot.it started in 1998 with Maurizio Ferrari sourcing and selling motors for fellow slot car racers in Italy and then America. It has been an amazing 21 years!  Policar was the 'Scalextric' of Italy in the 60s, 70s and 80s - if you wanted to explain about slot cars, the general public would understand if you talked about Policar. The parent company produced a vast range of diecast models and went out of business in 1993, the main Polistil brand now being owned by the Maisto group in China. The Policar slot car brand was resurrected in 2014, initially described as a German company, but now under the same roof as Slot.it in Italy. They started by producing re-badged Slot.it Ferrari models (312PB and F40), then the fabulous classic March 701 and Lotus 72 F1 cars, followed last year by the Ferrari 330P4 and 412P classic sports cars. All the cars have boxes just like Policar packaging from the 60s. The new Policar track system also arrived last year with the entry-level 'Home Racing' Toyota and Subaru cars - a real attempt to re-launch Italian mass-market slot cars...

The 'standard' Policar closed-wheel cars are almost identical in layout and components to Slot.it cars - the Policar models have plastic rear wheels, although can be upgraded using Slot.it aluminium or magnesium hubs. The new 'Home Racing' range cars are quite different and are discussed here. The F1 cars use the unique Policar motor mount and gearbox that gives smooth power delivery from the feisty FF 'slim can' motors. The format was developed in conjunction with UK enthusiast Andi Rowland who has since produced 3D-printed chassis (ARCO by conti_rowland on Shapeways) to convert other brands of classic F1 cars so they can use the Policar mechanicals. The classic F1 wheels and tyres are different sizes to the main Slot.it range, but have the same layout as the Slot.it components. The boxed cars have plastic rear wheels, but aluminium hubs are also available. I've seen prototypes of the new modern F1 cars and they look fabulous - including a nose section attached by a magnet...

Woodcote - that is the clearest, simplest explanation I have read anywhere of the histories and position of the two Galileo brands.

Several hats off to your explanation   Cool Cool

Yes, Thank you.

I see there is an Ferrari F40 in both ranges, so I'm going to compare specs to see how they have differentiated between the brands.

The Slot.it F40 will be a pre-2014 release and will be a ‘kit’. It will have aluminium rear wheels, I think... Likewise, you might occasionally see Slot.it 312PB kits for sale. The kit thing was to circumvent a licensing issue. I suspect the Policar branding does something similar. There is no mention of the word ‘Ferrari’ on any Policar packaging - my 312PB says ‘n 3 Monza 1972’ and my F40 says ‘F40 n 40 - 2nd Silverstone 1995’. It’s the same with the Scalextric 330P4 and 412P. It’s only Carrera that currently holds a license to produce Ferrari slot cars.

OK, cards on the table...the bargain hunter in me is wondering whether I can buy a 'cheap' Policar car, replace a few of the screws and braids with something better, and hey presto, I've converted it into a magnificent Slot.it race honed thoroughbred!

This is the inside of the 312PB...

Apart from the plastic rear wheels, it is 100% a Slot.it Classic Sports car. Add £5 for aluminium rear hubs and you’re paying the same as the cheaper Slot.it cars at Pendles (eg a Ford GT40 for £45). It’s whether you want a Ferrari or not. The Home Racing cars are much cheaper, but they are definitely not the same as a Slot.it thoroughbred!

New?
Isn't Nuremburg 2020 the 4th consecutive annual fair that this car has been announced?
