It's that time of year again. You know, when those of us who still like F1 start to look at the pre season testing, and try to make wild guesses at who's looking good, who's sandbagging, and who's failing miserably.

With no change in the regulations this year, I wasn't really expecting any big innovations in the design of the cars. But then... boom ... Mercedes came out with two.

First, a completely new arrangement of the rear suspension to clean up the air around the back of the car, and increase downforce.

And secondly, perhaps more controversially, a system that allows the driver to change the angle on the front wheels, from a toe out on the corners, but then straighten them up on the straights.

If those systems work out, and are proved legal, it could be a grim season for the other teams. But there is an element of risk for Mercedes.

More importantly, it could be a historic season. Hamilton could actually equal Schumacher's record of seven world titles. I never thought I'd see anyone do that, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I wonder how the other teams will build that into their existing chassis!

I imagine the other teams will be trying to get the Mercedes steering system banned, as copying it probably won't be easy.

Mercedes claim that the FIA know all about it and it's within the rules. We shall see. I'm sure they have a 'standard' version as well just in case.

I've just read that it's being made illegal in the new regulations for next year, so it will be interesting to see if any of the other teams consider it worthwhile trying to copy it.

I will watch any and all motorsport no matter what form of propulsion.
I do hope though that this year has some more excitement than the last 3...

There were some great races last year, and Ferrari had a good car.

But if Mercedes' current pace is anything to go by, they might just dominate this year.

I really enjoyed last season. Plenty of action and plenty of races where the top four or five were in with a shout for the win. I also enjoyed seeing one of the great drivers at the peak of his powers, another great champion under pressure and a young superstar beginning to mature and show his true potential...

On that basis, I am looking forward to this year. I hope the Channel 4 'extended highlights' shows continue to be as excellent as ever. In my opinion, the Channel 4 format presents F1 in the most exciting light - stripping away the padding to present the best races in almost their entirety and then editing down the dull ones and filling the time with glitz, glamour and gossip. I'm happy with that. They have confirmed highlights of qualifying and the races for the whole of 2020, plus the British Grand Prix live.

I'm particularly excited about the return of Zandvoort to the F1 calendar at the beginning of May. I sat in the dunes there watching some racing back in the 80s. It is a wonderful setting for a track and lots of history too.

I went to the Zandvoort GP in the 80s, loved the place but it was a bit strange. You know the thing about no animals admitted to racing circuits? There was a small farm in the middle of it with pigs wandering about! There was also a couple of cats who sat on the tin roof of one of the buildings and watched the whole race.

And I went to Zandvoort in the 70s to see racing... Used to go there on holiday quite often. 

Saw the grand prix with the unbeatable jps cars and Andretti winning. But I also recall Rupert keegan coming off (as usual?) plus a Brazilian driver who rich parents bought him some of the previous years f1 cars to race.
