Pit Boxes
#1

Pit box

Over the years been through several iterations of pit boxes, usually some form of a plastic toolbox and for a while a Maplin 3 drawer aluminium unit, which was was discarded recently as too heavy loaded, to transport in my old age.

Currently running with this,

a grot shop £10 plastic toolbox that can take 10 or more cars, the controller, tape tools and other essential bits and weighs a lot less loaded than the Maplin unit.  By adding two 3dp trays I have three levels consisting of a top tray for sundries, with the underside of the lid having a clip fit array of drivers consisting of hex, Phillips, Torq X and bladed. Next level is controller, tape and cleaner and at the bottom, the cars in old Scalex clear covers.

Not the most elegant of solutions but cheap and cheerful and does the job. What do other people use?

Cheers

I bought a Poly Pit Butler when they first came out 30 years ago for £19.

It served well as a storage box for small parts during the years I raced RC cars.

In 2015 I joined the local Slot car club and the PPB was perfect and I've used it since.

There's currently 19 cars in there.  The bottom tray is full of tools.  I carry race-night bits & bobs in the box.

I acquired a Dewalt bag which is used for the three controllers I use (Synapse, Third Eye Gawronski, SlotIt SCP1).  There's also a GoPro, charging block and leads and whatever else will fit if needs be for race night.

Then there's a box for Slot Rally, an old sewing box the missus was chucking out, now filled with Rally cars (probably 20 or so) all in separate plastic bags.  Also room for a handful of timing sheets for club members.

A present for myself when I finished working, a kyosho (rc?) pitbox, but it's more of an equipment carrier than a mobile workbench.

I try to do all my pit work before I get to an event, so I just tend to carry the controllers, cars, tape, screwdrivers, glue and some Blu Tack.

I still haven't plucked up the courage to plaster the outside with slot related stickers...it's inside for me!

I could probably get away with a Stanley Fat Max toolbox but, hey, you're only a professional slot racer once!

I love puttering with gears

Has anyone found a UK source for the "Harbor Freight" pit boxes that are much loved in North America?   I have found very similar looking units but they are smaller than the desired size - 32x32x21cm (ish)

B&Q offer a similar looking unit but the dimensions are smaller.

Hopefully you already know what I am asking about, image from World Wide Slot Car Chat #278.

They can also be found under the brand name of "Stalwart" on Amazon and other retailers, at least in the US. Hopefully that provides some additional results for you.

Cheers Kev, I think I saw the "Tool Lab" unit earlier but I like the red and black one and it looks identical to the the Stalwart version.
Thanks for very helpful reply.

Leo

PS Edit:
Have ordered a red/black one from one of B&Qs partners for 15 pounds inc shipping :-)
Will report back with a link once I have received the unit.

I'm in the market for a 1:24 pit box, and I've had hands on the PowerHobby box and would not spend the money on it. I think it's cheaply made. I'm going to have a woodworker build me one based on these boxes

Corally make a nice RC pit box. Corally are renowned for top quality RC gear ever since they first started in the 80's.
