What are looking for?

Something you can time laps when running alone or a full-blown club set-up with race management etc?

PC, Mac, smartphone, stand-alone?

Just something for home use, I have the lap counter but would like to time laps. Something simple would be good.

I would try the Scalextric Hot Laps app (Android & iOS). You'll need to build a gantry so it fits over the track (Lego is ideal, if you have some handy). There's some decent gameplay in there too.

Another iOS option is LapTracker - AutoTimer, which is a generic timing app for various hobbies, athletics etc. An Android equivalent is Laptrax.

With all these, you need to be careful with lighting and shadows which can trigger a false lap. I think Hot Laps is the easiest to use, although I have used LapTracker for years for practice sessions at home - and timing proxy races.

Otherwise, it's a bit of a jump in complexity and price.

Having tried a couple of these lap timers, hot laps from scalextric works very well as does the slot car trainer app. Different apps for different scenarios. Hot laps will probably be my goto for racing and the other for lap timing individual cars.
Thanks to all for the heads up.

If you are using Scalextric track and can find an ARC ONE for cheap you can add it to the layout purely for counting laps and times and have the advantage of pitstops and other things the app brings.
Simply open it up and pull the center plug.

The other options mentioned here might be cheaper or easier though...
