News Bury St Edmunds Slot Car Club

2025 Season - Rnd 9 - Sept 16th

Septembers meeting was down on numbers with some people still on holiday but we  averaged eight and a half drivers over a double header of owner/driver racing for a change. (Usually it's one owner/driver and one club car class.)

Support race: Owner/driver Policar Maserati GTs

With equal cars it was down to the car set up and smooth driving from the eight drivers.  Close racing ensued with many side by side battles, Vic eventually coming home in first place just seven feet ahead of Bill. The screen shot from the last heat shows how close the racing was, Alan taking the win by a fifth of a lap from Ben, with Mark J just over a half a second behind in third spot.

Main race: Owner/driver Sports and GT cars.

Things were a bit different  in the more open Sports/GT class. Nine drivers took to the track, Ben topping the podium with his yellow NSR McLaren? (AKA Mosler!), a full two laps ahead of Vic. However, it was closer between Vic and Mark J, the latter being pipped to third spot by just two thirds of a lap as he pushed Vic to the class's lap record for the night in the final heat.

2025 Season - Rnd 10 - Oct 18th

FIRST CLASS! - 'Club' Pioneer Legends - Support Race:

Back by popular demand, all nine drivers had their names added to the roster to race the Pioneer Legends. This time a substitute was required for the blue lane car, it's slot guide catching on the engine detail. The gold car proved a worthy alternative though, until the 'proper' car could be fettled  on the work bench back in Chesterfield.

As always with these cars, racing was very close with lots of sideways action. Even those who had opted out of this class at earlier meetings soon got the hang of the different driving style required, to such an extent that Mark W set the class record for the night with a 13.832 fastest lap.

Up until the last heat it looked like the podium was settled, with Mark J first, Shaun second and Graham third, the three being covered by four fifths of a lap. However, no-one was more astonished than Doug when the overall results showed him taking his first - and probably only - B St E race win by just over half a lap, thanks to that gold car on the blue lane in the final heat!

Mains: Owner/Driver Saloons

The 'Owner/Driver' class always provides an interesting grid, from the most recent and outrageous DTM's, through various years of the BTCC and on down to the truly historic and eccentric saloons of 'yesteryear'.

The 1/32 technology reflects the changes over the years and of course, as per their one to one counterparts, they finished more or less in that order, the newest cars filling the rostrum with the oldest trailing some way back.

It did throw up another first time winner though, a delighted Graham taking the top step of the podium by just over three laps from Vic' and five and a half from David.

At this point Alan and Shaun had to take their leave and it looked like the meeting was just about done but ....... no. Time for one more class of one and a half minute heats!

BONUS! Fly Trucks Support race:

With two club members on their way home the remaining seven, again by popular demand, opted to run one more - very brief - class, the Fly Trucks. They were to run 90 second heats, Race Coordinator taking care of the low driver count and need for someone to marshal and run race control.

The results were possibly even closer than the Legends, just two laps covering all seven competitors, with yet another name topping the leader board. Bill, who had been running race control most of the night finally got his reward, leading Mark J home by half a lap, with Mark W just a third of a lap further back.

Remarkably eight of the nine club members had featured on the podium at some point during the night.

Time to pack up and wend our various ways home.

Thanks go to Bill for leading me back to my hotel in the dark, through B St E's one way system and roadworks, after my satnav decided it had enough.

Thanks Bill!

2025 Season - Rnd 11 - Nov 8th

Nine club members turned up for the penultimate meeting of 2025, fortunately with none showing  signs of the dreaded lurgy! The long circuit was set up on 11v and  running in the reverse direction once again. Practise was much needed, with many cars being driven into the bridge barriers on the shorter straight at full speed, some hitting so hard they ended up on the floor. It certainly helped focus the drivers attention but it took a long time to retrain the hand/eye coordination, with many crashing several times before they 'got it', although it was quickly lost again under race conditions!

First support race: Sideways Group 5 Club cars

The grid comprised two each of the Gp5 BMW M1's, Capri's and Lancia Betas, the eight drivers getting to race all six 'Vic-prepared' cars, Vic' sitting this one out. Average lap times were around 13.6 seconds with many dipping into the high 12's, which makes David class record of 9.001 look like a marshalling glitch. Sorry David! Racing was 'fast and furious' in most heats with Mark J eventually coming home in 1st place, ahead of Ben and a rapidly improving Graham.

Main race: Owner/driver American Muscle and Nascars.

An interesting class with many different (and some highly modified!) cars from Pioneer, Thunderslot and Scalextric, with several using 3D printed chassis. Nevertheless, both lap times and racing were very close, Mark Ware setting the class lap record at 11.769 seconds on his way to a 3.2 lap win over Vic and Ben, the latter pair being separated by just 0.6 of a lap.

Second Support race: Slot.it Nissan R390 Club cars

With the meeting having run very smoothly there was time to 'slot.in' a quick Slot.it class using the club Nissans, again race-prepped by Vic', who also added custom paint and tape mods to help differentiate them on track. Heat times were cut to two minutes, with average lap times being around 12.5 seconds, about 1.1 seconds faster than the Gp5 class. Having set a class lap record of 11.72 seconds Mark J went on to take his second win of the evening. It was hard won though, this being the most hotly and closely contested race of the night. Two laps covered first to third these being taken by Ben and David, Vic missing out on third spot by just a tenth of a lap.

2025 Season - Rnd 12 - Dec 20th

Being December it seemed appropriate for the ten drivers to run their Rally cars, with the club waiving the usual meeting fees to make the last meeting of the year free for all, setting the scene for a similar night of racing!

Support race: Club Policar Subarus - stock apart from a 'Vic race set-up'.

With all cars and motors being the same this was probably the hardest fought and closest finish of the year.

Local boy Mark J came home in first place, three and a half laps ahead of the rest of the field, Bill taking second spot on 73.4, barely a third of a lap ahead of David on 73.1. Fourth to sixth was covered by half a lap, Mark W, Shaun and Vic (72.4) filling the card in that order, with seventh place Ben being hot on their heels one lap further down.

A stunning penultimate race, with second to sixth places being covered by one lap!

Main race. Owner/Driver Rally cars with inline chassis and motor limit of 21K.

Many different makes and models took to the track in various states of tune.

More speed meant more crashes!

Ben avoided some of the worst to come home the winner with his NSR Punto Abarth, securing the top spot in the very last heat with another win and the  class record to boot.

Fastest lap was close though, with Mark J eleven hundredths down and Bill just twenty-four hundredths down on Ben's pace. Mark J was in second place overall, 1.6 laps back, with Shaun chasing hard to take third 0.7 laps further back.

A great end to the 2025 season.

Thanks to the jet-lagged Graham for providing mince pies all round and the club for the free nights racing. Last but not least, all club members were given an early Christmas present of a new 20K motor to install in their own Policar Maserati GT ready for next year.
