I've been using Microsoft products all my IT life - ie since about 1996.  I guess I'm not the only member here who has or does.

Currently I'm still using Windoze 8.1.  It does all I want, and I've got used to it.  But it does have some really annoying things that I've been unable to turn off - the charms, for example.   
I also had a really stressful experience when it automatically updated to 10 a few years ago.  I spent ages trying to roll it all back.  Normally, I don't allow updates, but that particular one caught me out.  Also, I now get messages every time I start the laptop telling me that I have to update to 10 or my device will become unusable.  I can see this situation getting worse once 10 is forcibly replaced by 11 later this year.

Recently I've read of someone using Linux.  To be honest I didn't understand a lot of the language, but it seems to be a case of "install it and forget it".  No forced updates to deal with - or learn to live with.  But is it useable enough for a technophobe?  I bricked a laptop years ago and don't want to risk doing it again.

I dabbled with various iterations of Linux 2 or 3 computers ago but went back to windoze.

Currently on W10 but will be forced to buy a new PC when W11 properly replaces W10 as the 3D software I use will no longer work on W10 (I use Fusion360)

...which has me thinking now you mention it, will Fusion 360 work on Linux...I will have to find out right now......

...the answer to my question is yes...and no which brings back memories of faffing about with Linux where I seemed to spend as long getting round problems than actually doing the work, probably because I'm more of a user than programmer/tech dude.

Don't get me wrong. Technology is great. But my modem loses connection every time the string goes slack between the two cans. One can on the telephone pole, and the other on my igloo.

My friend Nanook next door hangs a fish on his string to help keep it tight. He says it works great.

As a Mac user since 1985, I'm surprised to see PC users refer to my least favourite operating system as Windoze! (I had to use it at work  )

I thought that was a relic of the inter OS wars some time ago. I could never understand the levels of enmity that the whole thing seemed to generate. Most people would prefer to use Makita tools and I don't think the premium price of those caused such aggressive debate. They are, after all, just tools that do a a particular job rather well.

Makita...now you're talking my language...funnily enough when I first started working in the mid 70's Makita angle grinders were seen as cheap cr*p!...how times change eh

I've been using Windows since after DOS with my C64, and MAC since around 1994. I'm currently on a new PC I built into a SFF case the Fractal Terra Jade running Win10. It's an i7-13700K processor with an Asus ROG RYUJIN III 360 AIO, 32GB RAM, 2TB NVME M.2 drive, and Nvidia 4070 Super FE video card. The processor was throttling from heat before installing the AIO, but I had to cut the case for the display to fit. I have an LG-40WP95-C curved monitor that's 5120x2160 resolution with Display Port. I love it all.

                       

The CPU doesn't even reach 68 degrees Celsius when running Heaven stress test maxxed out! Although the FPS dips down to 30 at some points. No concerned at all!!

Back to the OP's post about bricking a computer - you could always reformat a drive and load an OS on it if you have the correct tools. I run WIN7 on my Dell XPS laptop from 2006 because I use it for work and need to connect to everything on the planet for configuration and programming.

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

MAC is great also for specific tasks. Do I think it's superior to Windows, yep, but not for everything. AutoCAD for instance is Windows. Savant is MAC. With the cost of a new Mac Mini, there's no reason not to have one!

Ohh and Linux is for Power Users and Geeks!!

The buggers replaced the mini with a new model about four months after I bought mine  We got Ronnie a MacBook Air and she is well pleased with it. Aesthetics come into all of life for me and most Macs just look good - and I've never had one not work or stop before I was ready to replace it.

I tried to use the translator on most of that but it came back with Greek or something. I'm surethere are people somewhere who have some idea what you were talking about
