I had been sitting on the fence with these, but just before Xmas they were going for a sensible amount on the amazon black friday sale.
When it arrived, I looked at it and saw some potential for a conversion to a Roscoe P Coltrane cop car so I ordered another.
I also needed a Chigago cop car to chase Jake and Elwood, unfortunately at the time there were none for much less than RRP, but I had some Nectar points and so I got a tenner of on ebay !

When I eventually got around to trying them out on my track, I was left disappointed.
They were hopping all over the place, and even glueing in the motor and bearings failed to sort it.
I know Brian said his ran OK so its my usual luck with Scalextric cars, I mostly get the Friday afternoon ones !

Oddly the motor is mounted on its side ... I say oddly as I know Scalextric did this on the Mustangs so they could have a full interior, but in this case the motor would sit normally and still fit under the stock interior so IDK what they were thinking.

So first things first, get rid of the huge tannoy that was only on for a short time in the film, fill in the holes and repaint the roof roughly to match the rest.
This one is destined to be Roscoe's Car, so will get a repaint later..




Then I set about designing a chassis and thinking how best to mount it and retain the stock lighting and as much of the interior as possible.
I 3D Printed some adaptor posts to mount from the existing points without needed to modify the body at all. Under the posts I have M2 screws so I can lock the post height, or back them off to have a bit of vertical give if I want.



Then I cut off the front and rear of the chassis to hold the lights and bumpers in place and still have some fuel tank and exhaust detail, as well as hold my posts in place.
Then 3D Printed the chassis and a 1mm Offset sidewinder pod that takes snap in bearings and uses the plastic end bell to drive from so I can use the stock (or more likely in my case) Pioneer motors.






The car stock also sits with its Derrier higher in the air than I would like, so my chassis is designed to lower the whole car a little, and make it sit flat. I haven't got to build it up fully yet, but I believe this will achieved the stance I want.




Due to the extra height of using a Pod Chassis, I need to lose some of the interior, but retain the way it all fitted. As the floor is what holds it together I needed to first epoxy 2 square brass tube frames, before chopping off the bottom. Here is the before and after.



Jake and Elwood have been removed from one interior to make way for Roscoe and Flash. Flash has been printed. He is quite small so is more of a representation but I think he came out good enough. Roscoe will be a repainted driver from somewhere !
I also printed a police light bar, which I hope I can make work with LED's, but if not I am not fussed with having non working one.
Talking of which, the Chicago Cop Car has PCB mounted on the underside of the interior for its Blues, so I will need to relocate that.

Excuse the 3D parts ... they are fresh of the printer and need tidying, as do the interiors.

You really like to make a rod for your own back!
The approach you are taking is just the same as I would do. 
I like your novel approach to the interior fitment.

It's a huge car. 

One of our club members bought one recently for our TV/Film nights on this year's calendar. We're keeping cars close to stock so it doesn't turn into another 'racing special' event.

Having re read your post, I have just worked out what you have done with the interior. 
I had never thought to do that when chopping interiors to fit onto a different chassis, great idea, and so simple.

Interested to see how your major re design finishes up!

It is, but then you would have to lose most of the interior.
Has Gareth gone on to other things ?
I had one ages ago, great bit of kit, but very niche and therefore not profitable for him I guess.
Having just started to design and print basic chassis, I can really appreciate the design work and engineering that went into making them a printable kit. A very talented chap.

Well free time has been at a shortage latley, but having just finished and shipped my proxy cars, I could get a little more done on my 3 Monaco's (Blues-mobile, to be Rosco Cop car, and Chicago Police car).
I honestly can not understand why scalextric chose to mount the motor upright, As I already noticed, there is room for it to sit in the "proper" orientation with the stock interior, and perhaps with it that way, they wouldn't have had to jack up the rear of the car so much !

My wheel and tyre comb comes in approx.  0.5mm under the stock diameter, and with the car sitting flat I have dropped the front around 1mm, and the rear around 3mm.
