Never understood why this was 2 wheel drive in UK and 4 wheel drive in Spain

The 2WD had lights and the 4WD did not. I guess it may have been an agreement between UK and Spain, no technical reason though as all three of my 959s now have both 4WD and lights.

The Spanish (so 4wd) ones were also available "con luz".
It was fairly easy for Hornby to change the first two "borrowed" Spanish 4wd cars (Audi & RS200) to Mabuchi power because the drive to the front wheels was done with bands.
The 959 being double gear driven was a different challenge - presumably no twin shaft Mabuchi was available in Hornby's budget.

Yes it was.
The one nicer thing about the UK version was the tampo printing instead of stickers.
