Whats on your bench ...
#81

Not exactly a slot cat workbench, but having been on several loooong project calls I decided to make a start on my first project car today.

I had this but mad idea to have one car/vehicle to clean the rails and brush the track, sort of a track services kinda thing so bought a gulf racing truck as it was cheap and industrial looking

It now looks like this after stripping most of paint off.

Not sure what colour it’s going to be, what livery it’ll have but plan is to put some windows and a driver in it, maybe some lights and some brushes on the front to sweep the track.

A bit useless I know but it’ll keep me out of mischief?

Looks like a good start 964rh.

I would laugh my head off if I called the New York, Checker Cab Company for a ride. And a huge yellow rig showed up with checkered stripes. And a cabbie-light on top.  Bigsmile

Update no 2 on my Frankenstein lorry build/bodge!

Progress has been really slow, mainly due to work taking over my day, me not making up my mind on what colour/livery its eventually going to have and a 5 teething month old.

I think the colour scheme will be cream and an electric blue (bit like the Masarati MC12) with track services livery, might try and detail paint the engine/5th wheel bits if I can find a reference pic.

I have made a start on the driver and dash

And rather than go for headlights, found a really small light bar so that'll be mounted on the roof

Holiday coming up and then 3 months of parental leave so hopefully it'll get finished at some point!

Very nice looking scratch-builds Alexis and 964rh. It would be nice to see these builds expanded in the Scratch forum. Everyone wants to see more details.  Thumbup

The milling machine is finally functional as of today. I would not say it's on my workbench. It's a workbench all on its own.

The remote digital readouts were a bit of a challenge to install. But well worth the effort. They hide behind, and under the slide table.

It's time to start producing a few chassis.  Thumbup

Thank you very kindly, Mickey.

12-aluminum chassis were pre-sold to club members on the news of this mill hitting my floor. That took me by surprise. The first dozen cars made on it won't even be mine. Who knew this was even possible?

Shock horror! It's a ...can't believe I'm saying this but........it's a Scalex car!

Out here, every ex pat seems to have an old Scalex set in the loft that they bought out here for some reason. I advertised a while ago to see if anyone wanted to come and race on my track but just got a zillion offers of loft finds!

So far, 100% of the track has been unusable, bent, broken, rusty etc. Cars ditto although, let's face it, they weren't fit for purpose in the first place (probably better now - wouldn't know)

I was dumping some bits yesterday when I found a Porsche under one set of track pieces. I had no idea it was there. My usual practice is to put the cars on the track, decide that they are rubbish and add them to the pile awaiting the dump.

This one though, looked quite decent so, once the bits had been removed, I set about getting rid of that ugly great whale tail thingy on the back.

Quick colour and I reckon it will look OK when it's done. Not sure what chassis it will get yet.

Oops, pics round wrong way but no huge problem.

Soldering, or 'soddering!' as I now have learnt to call it, is not my favourite task, so I was pleased with not melting anything I shouldn't have. Very happy with my wire management until I tested the car and discovered it would only go backwards. A quick swap over of the guide leads got it going in the right direction, but now the wires rub where they cross over...any tips to solve that? (I was going to wrap the wires in some tape).

I love puttering with gears
