As I've been voted into the position of Scrutineer at ESC (Eastcote Scalex Club..soon to be added to this forum) I need to have a gauss checker (magnetometer in other words) to check the magnetic power of motors.
The only checker that I was ever aware of was the one made by DS, but unfortunately they stopped making them a few years ago. There does not appear to be any 'suitable' replacement on the market now.
NOTE:- Do not confuse a Magnetometer/Gauss checker with an EMF checker. An EMF meter measures electromagnetism..in other words the magnetic field generated around something that has electricity flowing through it....like cables in the wall. A magnetometer measures the magnetic field around an object that has magnets in it without any electrical power flowing through it, like a slot car motor off the track.

I rather favour Don Siegels method of scrutineering.
Sees car. Picks car up. Has a quick look. "hmm...seems OK...next"

If only it were that simple.

This is for club racers where they race on plastic track without any magnets other than those in the motor. The RPM and magnetic attraction of the motors to the contact rails is measured.
There are in every club some quite serious 'racers', and there are some who will still try to get around the Rules/Regs of each Class and who will use every trick in the book to have an advantage over everyone else. This can go to the extent of shaving the bottom of the bodyshells and cropping the body mount posts to get their car lower to the track, or...using slightly smaller or larger diameter wheels and/or lighter mag wheels, or changing pinions, or even re-wrapping motors, or swapping the motor magnets and even the armatures etc etc. I have seen them all in my time at one club of another. Class Rules/Regs are there for a reason...to make it as level a playing field for everyone as possible.

I can't believe that such people exist

Do you race with our club? Sounds like you could. Your forgot to add painting the motor :) - At our club it has got to the point where basically I don't have any interest in racing anymore. I check to see who has indicated they are attending and if some racers are going to be there I do something else with my time.

Hello CrazyG,
How did you get on with this? Any feedback to share?
