News Bury St Edmunds Slot Car Club

Caught my eye too. Looks great, doesn't it.

I've asked. Hoping the owner has seen the query and is able/willing to divulge.

Same day. Now 18:38. No response so far but looks like the body is by Carrera?

(Private response sent 1/2/25, re set-up.)

2025 Season - Rnd 1 - Jan 15th

Twelve members rallied round for the first 'tarmac' event of the year with an unlucky thirteenth, the race controller/pc operator, having to cry off due to an attack of the Covids.

Support race Club Ninco Peugeot Rally cars

As usual, there was some close, fun racing with these old but evenly matched cars, all built by club member Vic'.

Shaun took the first win of the 2025 season, closely followed by Mark J. Third to fifth were, Ben, Mark W and Vic, with David and Graham less than two laps down forming the buffer zone to the rest of the field.

Main race Open class - Owner/driver Rally cars.

Although down to ten competitors in this class, Brian and Aaron having a long drive home, things shifted up a gear here. MSC cars were the class of the field in either 2 or 4 wheel drive, taking up most of the fastest lap times.

David moved up from sixth in the Peugeots to bring his red Subaru home in top spot in this class, as Ben and Shaun made the podium once again.

This time Ben moved up a place to finish in second ahead of Shaun in third, two fifths of a lap ahead of Vic in fourth place.

Next meeting:  Sat 8th Feb, doors open 5pm at:

Gt.Whelnetham Community Centre,
Stanningfield Rd,
Bury Saint Edmunds.
IP30 0TX

We will be racing on a Digital track with cars supplied by Shaun.

This will be a team event, drivers being selected  from two groups on the night.

(Yes, I know I posted the pic' twice  Bigsmile )

No need to bring anything. Tuition will be given on how digital works with the special hand controllers. Five cars will be driven by us and one by computer, so we could have six cars on one lane. How exciting!

There will also be pit stops to refuel using your hand control, as the faster you drive the more fuel you use and the more pit stops you have to make. Only you can decide when to come into the pits because if you run out of fuel on the track your car will stop and you'll be out of the race.

We will be setting up our normal short version track with the hairpin corner at the end of the straight, using the inside lanes 1,2 and 3. There will be lane changer sections at suitable points around the track and only one lane that can enter and exit the pits.

On the night Shaun will talk us through all the options on how to race, however one over-riding RULE is not to ram another car which is in front of you but to wait until a lane change section before overtaking.

Any further questions just ask Shaun.

See you there with crash hat and face guard at the ready.

2025 Season - Rnd 2 - Feb 8th

Bit of a wobble in the calendar, with no race report or photos from the rather fraught digital evening!

With the last digital meet over five years ago track set-up proved difficult and unreliable, with some of the `flippers' having a mind of their own, sending cars into the opposite lane. Digital driving techniques were at best rusty for some - and totally new to others, resulting in some really hard crashes upsetting the chips so the cars were driving themselves. Despite the carnage Shaun did a fantastic job and not to be detered digital will be attempted again later in the year on the bigger circuit .

2025 Season - Rnd 3 - Mar 15th

Back to more familiar (analogue) ground for this meeting luckily, as a couple of potential new members turned up to race the club (Shaun) provided Minis and owner/driver Nascar and American Muscle cars.  Stewart and Larry made it up to fifteen attendees for the night. With the long track set up, voltage on 11.5 and practise over, the racing began.

Support race: Shaun's 'Club' Scalextric BMW minis

Much like the 1:1 series, racing was very close, sometimes hectic with a good few crashes. Out of the melee the winner was local driver Mark J. The top four places were covered by 1.2 laps, the winning margin taking much of that. Mark finished on the top step with 52.7 to David's second place 51.9. Vic' took third on 51.6 - but only by a tenth of a lap from car supplier Shaun, fourth on 51.5. Larry was top visitor of the day in ninth place.

Main race: Owner/driver American Nascar and muscle cars.

Down to thirteen here as Brian and Aaron had to set off for their trip back home.

Thirteen drivers meant there were thirteen different cars and car setups. It made for some very colourful grids but a wider spread in total lap scores.

In the final heat it was neck and neck between three drivers to see who would come out on top overall. It looked close, could Vic' and Mark W topple Ben's final score of 53.4 laps?

The pair had one last chance for top spot, battling hard for overall position right down to the  last second. Both closed the gap but neither could stop Ben holding on to gold with his silver Thunderslot Mustang. His 53.4 was just out of reach, Vic' coming home second on 53.2, with Mark - but not Mark J, Mark W this time - being two fifths of a lap further back in third.

Larry and Stewart made a good showing here, taking ninth and tenth in this class. Hopefully they both enjoyed it and we'll see them again at the next meeting.

2025 Season - Rnd 4 - April 19th - 'Club' Fly Trucks

A healthy fourteen attended the fourth round to race in three classes. First up were the Fly Trucks. Revised since their previous use, ALL wheels had been checked for secure fitment on the axles - we lost an entire front end set-up last time they were run! In addition guide flags had 'stoppers' fitted, so no 180 degree spins this time, plus the sprung guide action was better controlled. The whole race ran without issue (hooray!), although some felt the lane three truck was a little slower than the rest. I'll be looking in to that. It may just be the gearing. However, since we were running them IROC style it was the same for everyone.

As can be seen from the 'Race results' screen shot, things were VERY tight. with a little over five laps covering the entire field. Just 4/5ths of a lap covered the top three, with Mark J leading Ben and David for podium honours.

2025 Season - Rnd 4 - April 19th - Owner/Driver GT's

This was more about the chance for drivers to show off their cars - any motor, any configuration - as well as their building and driving abilities, so let's concentrate on the cars. Unfortunately I can't link owners names to those shown but they'll know who they are.

With so many variables the field was widespread at the end of the race with 21.5 laps separating first to last place but as you can see from the photo, bottom left, there were some remarkably close finishes - and proud owner/drivers.  Thumbup
