Utility DIY Storage Tool Box Carry Case 4 Drawers & Organiser Dividers : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

i purchased this one ages ago , works ok , but one of the clasps is not very good
good cheep options , but nothing is as good as the original Poly Butler cases imo
i printed an extra bottom shelf and slotted inserts to keep the tyres raised in the drawers for mine which work great (pics to follow)
very hard to find these days , but i think versions are still available in the EU
hope this helps Leo

Cheers Kev, I think I saw the "Tool Lab" unit earlier but I like the red and black one and it looks identical to the the Stalwart version.
Thanks for very helpful reply.

Leo

PS Edit:
Have ordered a red/black one from one of B&Qs partners for 15 pounds inc shipping  :-)
Will report back with a link once I have received the unit.

If the dimensions shown in the images for those Stalwart-style tool boxes are accurate, I'm afraid those will be on the small size in comparison. They might still work well for shorter 1/32 cars, and only three cars wide, but I fear that longer cars, such as modern F1, or LMP/Hypercars, will not fit inside unless one or two per shelf on the length rather than width of the shelf.

I'm happy to adjust my shelf designs if provided with the width and depth available.

I took a £15 punt on the ‘Stalwart’ type plastic tool chest last week with the quoted dimensions of

27.5L x 17.5W x 25.5H centimetres

from Amazon UK.

and found that Mr Flippant is correct that it is too small to carry Group C, Hypercars etc in the tray area face on as the usable depth is @130mm. The quoted length/width relates to the top box area which will take cars to just under 160mm, but only 2 off, one either side of the catch and a 3rd car less than 135mm in-between.

Depending on your needs, it will take 3 cars abreast face on (less than 130mm) or 2 longer cars side on plus one short car face on, in the tray area using three levels only. The four supplied trays at 25mm deep are too shallow, so would need to be replaced with either 3 shelves or 3 trays to get the depth required giving a capacity of 9 cars.

Bottom line at £15 its a cheap option if you only need say 6 cars and use your own deeper trays to carry 4 long and 2 short cars, use one supplied tray for spares and the top box for the controller, tape, and tools.

Cheers

Hello Kev, Greg and John.
My box/organiser arrived today, and I have achieved the same outcome as John...    Tappingfoot

The component boxes are 230mm wide and the flip-door will not close with a good old Scalextric Porsche inside and the shelf vertical spacing is less than the height of the Porsche with the guide removed.
(Greg's "hop-up" trays are 273mm wide.)

So the nice red and black unit from "Dirty Pro Tools" is too wee.  I will probably use it to store LEDs and resistors and such.

It would be simple to rejigger the existing shelves for three or two cars in the aforementioned orientations. Along with an optional pair of "stilts" for one shelf, you could take up three shelf spaces to have two car trays with enough vertical space for most cars, leaving one space for a parts bin, and the top for your controller. With some good measurements, I'm sure the front panel filler work surface could also be adapted for that smaller box. Those with the skills can certainly have at it, but I'm also happy to lend a hand with that if needed.

And many people just use a sharp knife to cut walls out of the parts organizers to make them into car shelves. :)

My approach is to spend on cars, tools and controllers.
A pit box is always bottom of the list so a DIY tool caddy meets my needs.
I see some pit boxes that are nothing short of full engineering workstations.
That approach is fine if you race BSCRA and need EVERYTHING with you, but I don't.
It is also fine if you have plenty of pit table space at the club or event but often, space is tight.

So, DIY tool caddy from which I take one tray of "must have" tools, drivers etc.
The caddy normally sits under the table, out of the way and not taking up real estate of the pit table.

I keep the cars separately from the tools in a modified Carrera 1/24 case.
I have 3 of these cases, one for each of the 3 clubs I race at,  so while the tools remain the same, the cars are separate and distinct. I never race cars tuned for one track at another track.
It's also important for me to slide the car boxes under my bed. Space is valuable. Regular pit boxes just don't go.

Also, the modified carrera boxes are a good advertisement for visitors, journalists etc. All cars on view.
Two hands, two cases. It makes sense to me.

I’m approaching it from another angle, and will only be carry 1:24 scale cars. I don’t see a need for a box of some sort that has everything but the kitchen sink, therefore I found a car carrier that holds more than I would care to bring at any one point, and space for my controller and basic tools. If I need to bring more tools like the tire truer I’ll just make a box specifically for the “24 Hour Pit Crew” and fill it with every tool I can imagine.
It’s possible I actually don’t need any of these items and could just bring the couple of cars I want to run and my controller like I’m doing now. ?
