Nürburgring layouts
#12

The difference in the layouts is simply the type of corners used. Scalextric only make four different radius corner pieces, known as R1, the tightest, or smallest radius, through to R4, the widest, or largest radius. If you've already bought a set, then most, if not all of the corners will be R2 pieces. The tightest R1 corners can be awkward, especially the inside lane of the curve. I like them as a challenge, but other people don't. So, the second layout is an attempt to cut back on the number of R1 pieces, and where possible replace them with the more maneageable R2, R3, and R4 pieces.

There are many different opinions on all of this, so it's difficult to give absolute recommendations, and the same goes for the length of straight. But I'd say you need maybe 8-10 full straight pieces to allow you get up to full speed and back again. Maybe less than that if you've got fast corners at either end, maybe more if you've got a tight hairpin at both ends.

It also depends on whether you've got traction magnets in the cars. I imagine since you're just getting started, that you're using the cars as you bought them with the magnets still in place. Well, at some point in the future you might be tempted to try taking the magnets out of some of your cars, as most people find that a better driving experience, a little slower round the corners, but more fun, and less prone to cars flying off at full speed and smashing themselves to bits.

You'll definitely be able to race 6 cars, and you won't need extra power. You may need power taps, which are simply wires connected from the power base to other parts of the track to counteract the tendency for power to disappear at track joints. That's less of a problem with new track though.

I'll post the C numbers later, when I get a chance.

One other complication, as if there weren't enough already, is that if you've got "Start" track it may not be compatible with the main Scalextric Sport and Digital track system. I'm not sure though, hopefully someone who knows will pop in and enlighten us.
