Meanwhile, bragging rights for the car journey home were up for grabs with the little matter of the 'one car/two driver' battle between Terry and Phil...
Thompson's Twists kicked off the battle, with Phil taking a narrow 2 second lead into the next stage; Phil 1-0 Terry. Phil then squeezed out a handful more seconds on the sweeping Abbot's Wood stage, Terry was having a slow start to the day; Phil 2-0 Terry. The bumpy 'Raid' stage saw Terry spend 5 second more time that Phil flying through the air over the humps...Phil 3-0 Terry. The last stage before lunch was Tarmac (i.e. grass) Terror where Phil managed to give back all his morning time gains with one, painful, tail happy, stage; Phil 3-1 Terry but neck and neck on time!
The afternoon started with Welsh Dragon, and Terry takes his second stage in a row, and at the same time, almost doubles his lead over Phil; Phil 3-2 Terry. Could Terry keep the momentum going on the penultimate stage, SCM...? Phil regained some focus and halved his deficit to Terry, Phil 4-2 Terry. There was less that 10 seconds in it going into the last stage, so it was all still to play for. However, the large Galant proved a handful for Terry on this twisty, slippery, compact little stage, and all hope of silencing Phil on the M25 went up in (tyre) smoke as the stopwatch kept running for what must have felt like an eternity longer that in had for Phil.
So Phil won the head-to-head stage wins by 5-2, with an aggregate time around 30 seconds better than Terry's, who I'm sure, appreciated all the advice Phil gave him on slot rally driving technique on the way home...
