A good post to follow is on SFI - Chris - My oXigen journey. He has a working O2v3 Carrera setup that is working well...
There is a lot of good advice above. The toy guys have robust digital systems and the majority start with one of them (Carrera for me).
To various degrees, I use Carrera, oXigen and Scorpius. I have SmartRace but as a lone user don't really use RMS or Simulation to their full potential.
As for controllers I prefer wireless. I have both types of Carrera controllers but do not use them - okay to start with but... For Carrera Frankenslot - the only option that I am aware of for wireless. My favorite is the SCP3 but only with O2 chips ©. The lack of an advanced feature rich controller for Carrera will always be limited by the CU (firmware and protocol)
The RF guys are comprised of small development teams and their primary focus is on their specific digital system. Hybrid approaches either do not exist or are confound.
Some of us are hacking our way toward hybrid alternatives but there isn't any commercially available 3rd party solutions that I am aware of. Henri on SFI has suggested he might have something early this year. I have all the protocol pieces figured out but haven't found the motivation, yet, to take it to the next level (coding).
Ghost cars are a nice feature of digital slots to the limitation of their respective implementation. There are those of us hacking out alternative approaches but, again, nothing that is commercially available nor with plans to become commercially available. I did an implementation that was more of a smart controller that resulted in a competitive multi-speed autonomous solution. Plan was to revisit this but diversions persist!
