There are lots of applications were rechargeables are perfectly fine or even preferable (eg cameras, phones) and the latest generation of rechargeable AAs and AAAs hold their charge much better when not in use. However, unless the ARC controllers are being used daily in a public setting - and batteries routinely recharged overnight - decent alkaline AAs are my preference for casual home use.

A footnote on the event is that four of the people we met on Sunday came to our AFX race on Wednesday, including ten-year-old Harry who captained his team to Victory Lane. The write-up of the AFX event is here.
