Race reports - 20th July - GP/Prewing + Classic F1/F1
Grand Prix/Prewing (half tonners)
Eight racers tonight, with seven club members and a visitor, Joel. We had four other visitors during practice, two pairs of two, all seemed impressed with our club facilities and what we race, the more that see what we do the better the chance we’ll get someone wanting to have a go.
Joel, Ed & Mike H raced each other for three heats, two of those heats saw the closest racing in the GP/Prewing racing.
Heat #3 saw Joel’s Bimotore finish a few seconds ahead of Ed’s Lancia D50, then Heat #6 saw Mike H’s Cooper finish a few seconds ahead of Joel’s Bimotore.
The other heats were more stretched out, Andy’s Ferrari 156 (Open class) and Kev’s Auto Union D-type (Modified class) were the cars to catch.
Geoff’s Talbot Lago can be forgiven for breaking down (again!) after all, it is French. The breakdown cost him 2nd place in class as Brian’s Vanwall just keeps going and finished a comfortable 2nd in class behind Kev’s Auto Union.
Mike H’s Cooper feels a little lightweight but what a smooth runner, winning Heat #6.
A shout out to Ed’s Lancia Ferrari D50 (Standard class), a Cartrix car set up by Brian flew round to an easy win in Heat #1.
Joel borrowed Andy’s Bimotore and won Heat #3, he drove well tonight and enjoyed his visit.
We witnessed a prime ‘50p Trophy’ event as Ed, Mike H & Joel all finished less than half a lap apart with Joel being awarded the ‘50p Trophy’ for tonight.
Wins in heat order for Ed, Kev, Joel, Andy, Mike H & Brian
Classic F1/F1
I think tonight was a first…all eight NSR F1 (Standard class) event.
Joel, Ed and Mike H again lined up for their first of three races together, it became obvious that Mike should have been replaced by Gav in this class of racing as his blue NSR was in reality closely chasing Geoff’s Camel NSR. He didn’t have it all his own way however as Heat #3 saw Ed’s NSR finish on the same lap.
Gav bore the brunt of some ‘heavy duty banter’ as he raced alongside Andy’s NSR in Heat #2 and between Andy & Kev in Heat #7…thankfully he’s thick skinned and game for a laugh although his infamous jokes have been thin on the ground recently. Kev’s yellow NSR was not only very quick (a 30 lapper in Blue lane) but only two deslots all night meant Andy’s NSR with half a dozen deslots wasn’t going to keep up despite almost getting a 30 lapper in Red lane.
Brian’s NSR Toshiba F1 has had a bit of ballast tuning and looks stuck to the track, probably the best it’s ever gone tonight managed almost 82 laps to finish a few laps behind Andy.
Gav & Joel finished a few laps off the pace, Joel only managing three laps more than the Bimotore in the earlier GP races, these are completely different beasts to drive than the skinny GP cars. Gav really struggled in Red lane with the lowest single lane score in this class but his single lap pace is very quick.
Geoff’s NSR had a best run in Yellow lane, on the pace of both Brian & Andy but another one suffering in the relatively difficult red lane.
These are a bit of a shock after tiptoeing carefully round with the GP cars, these NSR’s feel like they can be thrashed but a few visits into the wall quickly slows you down to reality.
Wins in heat order for Mike H, Andy & Kev
