50's & 60's Monsters vs Minis
#2

Race reports - 13th April - 50’s & 60’s Monsters & Minis

This was going to be interesting, during practice Brian was driving a huge Ford Galaxie 500 alongside a Mini that was about half its size, lap times were similar but the driver of the Mini would have been nervous in the chicane!

Ed is in the process of getting a Mini and a muscle car so was allowed to race what he brought with him.

The plan was 5 lap qually, two rounds of racing where you could race either of your cars first, as it happens everyone chose to race Minis in Round #1 and Monsters in Round #2.

As far as who was going to win, it was down to consistency (or pure luck).  The predicted score for both of the drivers cars were added and the one closest to their combined predicted result is deemed the ‘winner’.  As these theme nights are all about racing something not normally seen on track, the fastest cars so far never seem to win them.

However there was plenty of pure racing seen all night and some close finishes.

Minis
  • Andy’s Mini is by far and away the best Mini seen on our track.
  • Kev’s ‘Golden Wonder’ Minisprint is also quick but not on the pace of Andy’s.
  • Geoff & Brian were both very consistent but Geoff’s Mini had the ‘racers edge’.
  • Mike’s Mini suddenly deslots, the rear tyre rubbing on the inside of the wheel arches definitely not helping.
  • Ed raced a Metro, it goes well but is added to the results sheet as ‘guest’ - a Mini will be raced next time.
Monsters
  • Mike’s Camaro looks like it has a magnet in the chassis, it’s stuck to the track in corners and he went faster as each round passed…post-race scrutineering gave it the all clear as regards the magnet.
  • Ed again racing a guest car but ‘something’ is in the post for the next ‘Monsters & Minis’ (October). He raced the Ferrari well and kept it out of trouble.
  • Kev’s Camaro & Andy’s Mustang weren’t far apart all night, racing was very enjoyable.
  • Geoff’s Mustang vs Mike’s Camaro vs Brian’s Galaxie…great battles, especially Brian & Mike who finished on the same lap overall.
So the ‘Team’ result ended up with Mike’s Mini & Camaro finish marginally ahead as predicted closely followed by Geoff’s Mini & Mustang.
