If you can solder neatly you could either buy enough cable to replace the existing one completely or buy all you need for the extension. Either way you would need to solder on a 3.5mm jack plug (or live with that adaptor thing). Having the same colouring in the cable will make it much easier to get right.

thanks for that, I still won't know what wires to solder where in the jack point.
That's why I wanted to use the old scalextric cable with the jack already in place and was hoping someone could help with what wires solder to what, like mentioned I don't want to get the wires the wrong way around but someone must no it.The soldering bit is the easy bit.
I haven't heard from Steve but to be honest with the experience I've had with buying this controller I didn't think I would.
