The 'bench' is the tray so I can move the cars around to wherever I'm currently working - and to catch/hold any loose bits whilst working on a particular car.
The tartan blanket is covering a footstool used as a table in front of my tv chair. It's non-slip surface keeps the tray in place and the weave helps 'capture' any bits that do escape the work tray.
To me the best part of acquiring any 'new' cars is the tinkering and fixing up. If I get an hour or so's enjoyable fiddling per car on the work bench I think I've got my money's worth out of it.
