Hello Scott. Welcome to SlotRacer.
I went with Scalex analog as my test track because it simply took up less space. There's also a lot of good reviews.
The jump and criss-cross are designed to wreck cars so you go out and buy more cars. Best to buy a few extra straight tracks and create an over-pass to avoid the criss-cross. Hide the jump and criss-cross from your son's sight before he sees them.
Stock Scalex analog controllers are very cheap to replace. Get a spare, and it may never break anyways.
Many intermittent power problems are often braid or car related and not track or controller related. Cleaning or straightening the braids can make a difference.
You'll have a hard time to beat the price of the American Police Chase set. Cool cars too.
My track is comprised of several analog sets, and fits within a 4' foot by 8' foot work bench. I have a Fast & Furious set in the mix. The jump, criss-cross, and 2-lane changes that came with it all went into storage.
