Scorpius v Oxigen
#1

I was just thinking slot racing is competition. There has always been a competitive rivalry between the two. Sort of reminds me of the Ford v Ferrari movie. Dont competition breeds better products and can only advance the hobby.
Also thinking why are all DISCA races held with only one brand?
And how much better it would be if 2, 3 or even more brands could compete on one track. How exciting would/could it be. And how competition breeds better products and better drivers.
All systems would need to be compatible on power, lane changing and lapcounting.
Is it physically possible to run a Oxigen system on a Scorpius track? No. So that’s out.
Is it possible vice versa? Not quite but very close. Power systems tick.
Lane changing…..we know oxygen uses SSD protocols for lane changing. The Scorpius MPD has a spare IR LED and we know the code. We could implement this in a day or two.
So the last hurdle…. lap counting.
Both systems use dongles so it’s possible. What’s missing to complete
the brief? Only one thing. A few lines of code.
So Maurizio would you be willing to share your code so we can compete?
Would you be keen to accept the challenge.
It would be awesome for the future of digital slot car racing and take it to a new place, a new level of competitive fun. After all isn’t that what 1:1 racing is all about?

Or….it could done using software instead of hardware. The PC would need both a Scorpius and Oxigen dongle installed and the software altered to accept two incoming streams. Thats 100% possible.
I know Guy from PCLC would do it if asked nicely.

Third alternative is simply 2 PCs, each with their own dongle and race software. Of course you would have 2 screens and the drivers would have to scan both and determine their position.

A fourth possibility is both RMS’ send data to a third PC which combines data.

So Maurizio I’m putting up a challenge to you in the spirit of competition and the hobby itself.

So Maurizio what do you think? Are you up for a fun challenge?

I look forward to your reply  Checkeredflag

I just remembered the Oxigen dongle to PC bi-directional protocol is online. Silly me.

However we send direct from car to keep air traffic at a minimum which may or may not be an issue. The two way comms would mean more work. But I see also the blue dongle is different from the yellow dongle and may not require the 2 way comms  Im yet to study the protocol in depth. Not only that I’m not a software guy.

Seeing we already send telemetry we could simply replace it with the 02 protocol as the Scorpius telemetry would do nothing anyway.

So it’s looking like not only will the Scorpius system be Carrera compatible but possibly Oxigen compatible. If that’s true then not only could Scorpius cars compete in
DISCA competitions it also gives Oxigen users “options”.  Wavegreen
Early days yet.

If you want a complete comparison between Oxygen and Scorpius you need to address all the differences.

And the biggest difference is availability! I can buy Oxigen components, controllers, chips, dongles etc., all over Europe. As a club I could even contact Mr. Ferrari, who by my knowledge doesn't have an account here, and he will personally come and help me setting it up.

Now where can I buy Scorpius?

Professor Motor used to sell multiple items but currently only has a few controllers for sale. They're in the USA.
You sell via your own website, you're in Australia.
Ade is your reseller in Britain, that is no longer a member of the EU.

Sa as a club if I would buy a complete setup for 10 to 15 members I would be severely penalised by import taxes and Vat.

Apart from that there would be no-one to give support, or would Ade come to f.e. Germany and stay there for a couple of days to help, on his own costs of course.

Even if Scorpius is technologically superior as an European club I wouldn't buy it.

Btw. I've read following comment on that other forum where you are banned:

Even Grok knows  ???

Gloating never help growing business it only show your British reseller can't be taken seriously!

Hi Henk
This is not a who can pee further thread or what system is better. I think there’s been a misunderstanding. The post is about Scorpius v Oxigen on a race track, not anything “overall”. Those points you can debate endlessly.

Seems I’ve ruffled some feathers. Sorry if you feel offended.

It is a GENUINE serious attempt to bring real competition to the emerging digital frontier which like 1:1 breeds better cars and better systems.

Wether people wish to compete with just one system or keep them seperate is purely up to them.

As for availability Controllers, WAMs, dongles and Gen 2 chips are all available right now, albeit from 2 different suppliers. The Lane Brain is currently out of stock. But the new one is MPD based, the hardware completed and just firmware to complete.
It’s not the first time a digital manufacturer hasn’t had stock available.  Wavegreen

And yes Marc Eicker will be distributor in Germany, and most of Europe. He distributes NSR. It’s all organised.

Professor Motor in the USA Is confirmed also, Mr Slotcar Australasia, Ade in UK, plus others and support as always will be second to none. With our money cheerfully refunded in full if you’re not happy policy that no other manufacturer offers.

Try and buy 02 in Australia or the USA, you cant. And?

Sorry I can’t help VAT. You pay it one way or the other regardless.

The thing is Henk no one in their right mind would buy Gen 1 Scorpius products fully knowing they will be redundant very soon and waste their money. And have a function set half of what the MPD range has to offer. Makes sense?
This however is totally off topic but I cent I needed to explain.

So Henk the the thread is about the possibility of racing multiple systems using multiple car brands so more people can have more fun and see competition breed better systems and advance the hobby quicker.

Henk would you like to see that?
If not it’s all good. And yes I was banned because I spoke my mind.

I believe you had some issues too and your account deleted.

I’d do it again and I have zero regrets. These things sometimes come at a cost and it was something I was willing to and couid afford to pay for. It’s all social media now bud, this is basically a permanent blog for easy reference and a very well run forum indeed.
By the way was that gloat or GOAT? Just kidding Bigsmile

If we could kindly get this thread back on topic the faster we can have some fun competitiveness along with some serious genuine competition,
I hope you aren’t scared of a little competition? Not sure if you’re using O2 or Carrera but either way next time I’m in Europe can I drop by your club and bring my kit? It will be able to race on either brand.

Sorry of Im mistaken I thought you said in another thread you no longer race in clubs and that was the reason you went from Scorpius back to analogue because you only race analogue alone at home so digital was pointless. So I’m a little confused.

Rick,

Oh my gosh! You got banned? You must have run into a dictator. They tend to ruin everything.

You can usually spot a dictator in the rules section. "You will be banned if I don't agree with you!". I've checked a few other forums out, and basically told them where go before I even joined. It's easier that way.

My apologies for pulling this thread off topic. I just think it's funny.

We are all very lucky that Jason Brown is a sweet heart.  Thumbup

Keep up the good work! (The wireless thing. Not getting banned)

Many thanks Ken, you are very kind.

We like to encourage all types of discussion.

I don't think this one has stepped over any boundaries albeit being a bit rude, but I'm not sure personal differences help in promoting the hobby.

The variety and breadth of slot car racing is one its advantanges. It is what we should celebrate.

I love banter, if you go to any club you'll get banter, what us Brits call 'taking the pi**', it's actually a sign of friendship.
...what I don't accept is being personally offensive on a public forum

... let's keep to banter

Back on topic, even though I don't have access to digital racing I'm finding this subject very interesting.

Life is like a box of Slot cars... Cool Drinkingcheers

Agree it’s a well presented, well maintained forum. Thanks go out to Jason and team. Thumbup
I just wanna race!
In the meantime I’ll ask John to look at the firmware when we resume after our 4 week break we just started. If it’s possible it may be something we implement.

So…….who wants a race?  Wavegreen

Surely, a simple rule for a forum is not to say anything you wouldn't say to the person's face?

I've seen that overstepped personally which is one of the reasons I only occasionally visit here these days and never go to SFI any more.
