Andrew Cowan passed away just a few days ago.
Andrew first came to my attention in winning the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon Rally. His rally career produced successes as a driver and team manager. Andrew was a compatriot and contemporary of Jim Clark in the Duns area of Scotland.

His role setting up and developing Ralliart should be the stuff of motorsport legend. Rallying (including the Dakar) was pretty much all the motor racing I followed seriously in the 90s, so Cowan's achievements as a team manager do really stand out for me - especially Tommi Mäkinen's four successive championships at the end of the decade. Of course, Mäkinen isn't doing badly at the head of Toyota these days - he has much to thank Andrew Cowan for.

Yes indeed, Andrew Cowan was very important for the rallysport.
His Ralliart-team won also the World Rally Championship for Manufacturers in 1998 for Mitsubishi, in front of Toyota and Subaru.
The Hillman Hunter winning London-Sydney Marathon 1968 was celibrated by Corgi Toys with a die-cast scale model, which is well-known.
RIP Andrew Cowan.
