What on Earth??
#11

The mains plug fell out of the back of the Mac this evening!! Switched it back on now I have the long list of photos again!! Tappingfoot

Fortunately, I have it set to go straight to 'recent' posts so I don't usually see the banner at all.

I think the only thing we could do to help here is to switch off the scrolling banners altogether.

But if things are changing for you, when nobody has made any coding changes to the site banners, then it kind of suggests a problem with your computer. Not that fault can be totally assigned one way or t'other when there is a communication issue, but you know what I mean.

The trouble is that I can't replicate the problem, which it makes it almost impossible to do any meaningful tinkering with the code.

Anyway, when I've got some spare time, I'll try to have a look at some other options to replace or rework the scrolling banners.

It is a bit strange that it isn't consistent or, it seems, browser dependent.

The strangest thing is, with Opera, it works OK with the VPN on but not with it off!! I have the VPN aimed at a UK site. The VPN is built in with Opera of course. Most of the time I don't bother with it as it does slow things down a little and I'm not that concerned with hiding my whereabouts.

I tried all six browsers this morning and they are all doing it so it certainly looks like it's this end. I wouldn't worry too much about it as there are only a couple of us experiencing it - I assume - and as I said, most of the time I go straight to the latest posts anyway so I don't notice. Not worth your time probably.

We have something like 6 or 7 Macs around the place of varying age - lost count, also a few more that don't work at all! Most don't to net duty (mostly music) but the two that do are not exactly spring chickens. This iMac is 2011. Stuff moves on so quickly these days that we find quite a few things that require a later model or operating system to work 100%.

We have no intention of updating as yet, they do most things perfectly well.

PS. Just tried it on Ronnie's MacMini and it's OK on that! It still tries to draw the list but then snaps to individual pics!

Thanks Gordon, it might well be the age of your computers, but it's still a concern to have two of our members having the same problem, and an eight year old machine is by no means unusual.

We want to be as inclusive as possible, so we may have to dial back the tech a bit.

Evening Gents,

Since I can't replicate the problems you're having, it would seem the only approach I can take is to try out some alternatives, and ask you to report back on whether they work or not.

I've tried out a lower tech option on the member's page. It doesn't have quite the same number of bells and whistles, but it's fairly close, and if it works for you guys, I'm more than happy to go with it.

It may well need you to have fairly recent versions of your browsers, but I assume you will keep those up to date. In any case I think this might have a more elegant fallback position of just showing one image, should all else fail, rather than all of them stacked on top of each other.

Plaese let me know. Thumbup

I'm sure I posted this yesterday but maybe I didn't press the right button. This is what I get in the member's thread.

Well that's a mixed bag of results then.

Looks like we may have two completely different issues. Greg's probably javascript related, and now fixed with the new version which doesn't use any scripts, and Gordon and Brian, who knows? Must be the css coding. I'll try a few things out.

Give it another check when you can and shout at me if anything works.
