Race reports - 14th December - Mosler ‘Club Challenge’ Championship finale
.
It was going to be interesting how these cars would drive on the recently painted track and at 11V like Challenge #6
.
The format for tonight was two rounds of 4 minute heats, everyone driving their own car…and Nigel as guest racing the club Mosler set up by Brian.
.
Speaking of Nigel it was great to see him back again, let’s hope we’ll see him on a more regular basis.
.
Everyone was invited to get some practice on the track, some hadn’t driven these cars at 11V and none of us had driven these cars on the grippy surface.
.
ROUND #1
.
Nigel, Ed & Mike B raced each other whilst Kev, Andy & Brian raced each other.
.
Mike’s Mosler didn’t wake up tonight but it made for super close races between these three, although Mike won all three heats it was by super narrow margins, Heat #3 by 1.2 seconds from Nigel (yes Nigel) and Heat #5 by 1.0 seconds from Ed.
.
The other three racers weren’t as close but Heat #2 certainly was as Kev won by only 1.4 seconds from Andy.
…Brian was ‘in the wall’ a lot…quite often whilst going through either Kev’s or Andy’s car!
.
Were there any problems?...of course there were, it’s a given…Mike’s Mosler struggled to accelerate under full power, checking the guide eyelets after a couple of races found nothing obvious, it was felt one of the wires was probably fractured inside the insulation but he struggled on with it for this round.
Ed had major problems with his thumb controller plunger sticking and not returning to the off position, he also struggled but changed to the club controllers for the 2nd and subsequent races.
.
Heat wins in heat order for Mike B & Kev
.
ROUND #2
.
Andy volunteered to join Ed & Nigel whilst Mike B raced against Brian & Kev, consequently there were no close races in Round 2.
The closest race was the final race of the championship after Kev had a look at Brian’s car and adjusted the body screws, Brian’s Mosler found an extra lap and finished 8 seconds behind Kev’s Mosler.
.
Heat wins in heat order for Andy & Kev
.
And so to the announcement of the Mosler ‘Club Challenge’ Champion for 2023.
With Andy & Kev not eligible it was going to be down to who turned up most between Brian, Chris, Ed, Mike B, Geoff, Gav & Mike H.
Brian was the only one to not miss any rounds and dropping his worst score was a 2nd place and so announced the winner this year.
.
The Mosler ‘Club Challenge’ 2024 will look completely different, 10 single rounds rather than the 7 double rounds we’ve had in 2022 and 2023.
.
As far as tyres are concerned, the ones currently on the cars look good for another year and the new track surface and lower voltage is polishing the tyres giving them tremendous grip.
.
…oh and Mike B’s car…it was indeed a fractured wire from the motor to the guide…no excuses next year Mike!
--------------------------------------------
Next week is the Christmas Slot Rally Special…aka The Turkey Targa (Florio).
Everyone will race/Rally one car all night on all three tracks.
The cars must have entered the Targa Florio between 1951-1972 inclusive.
Normal Standard, ProStock and Open Class rules will apply but the requirement for a navigator in the car isn’t mandatory.
