Experts be damned

Ronnie booked us in for a golf lesson this morning. neither of us had tried it before but now we have time, it seems a good idea to have a go at stuff.

There is a driving range and practice green quite near us so orft we jolleywelled.

Ronnie went first and I watched what he was teaching her as trying to hear what he was saying is a waste of time with my ears.

When my turn came, I asked him if the safety nets weren't a bit low and a bit near (100 metres or er...so). He scoffed he did! "No-one could get the ball anywhere near them at their first attempt" he said.

Don't know about you but I take that sort of thing as bit of a challenge Cool

"Use the driver" he said, "it will make no difference"

The first ball was a bit wayward but it cleared the fence some way to the left. The next ball cleared the fence at the end. "er" he said "would you swap to the iron please". So I put that one over the fence as well.

I think I might quite like this game Bigsmile

Golf is a simple game, it is just hard to play.

I played a little bit in the past. The walking was the part I liked the most.

Well done Gordon, you smashed it.

Ta!

I wasn't so hot on the pitch and put green though. I had trouble lifting the ball with such a gentle action. I will give myself the excuse of having to use the standard set of clubs they let beginners use. The average French person is about 5'9" and I'm 6'3". My knees only bend so far down whilst trying to keep my balance and get the swing right.

If, as it seems Ronnie wants to, we try it again, I might have to invest in some longer clubs. This could get expensive and I don't want to reduce expenditure on slot cars.

Ronnie has suddenly realised that retirement means time to do all the stuff she fancied but never got round to. Saxophone and clarinet (neither cheap) and lawn bowls (ditto) and now golf!!

Here's me, cheap as chips!

Naturally enough, being out here, I had to give it a go but it didn't.....float my boat. Ditto with bowls. Ronnie tried to get me interested but I got bored sadly. I think anything has to have a certain minimum pace for me to enjoy it.

I used to play tennis and squash to a decent club standard. Cricket was acceptable as I was a fast bowler - not so good with the bat though, I reckon that hard ball was always out to get me. At least with golf the damned thing stays still whilst you try and hit it!

Motor racing seems about the right speed, I can never understand the attraction of trains or their toy equivalents. I reckon I was missnamed as a kid, Steady was my nickname at school of course.
