Whats on your bench ...

A couple of pre-war GP cars I've re-chassied, both were the late Mike Dove's cars.

Betta & Classic fibreglass Mercedes W25B.

This originally had a brass chassis that sadly didn't work very well and was massively overpowered...so I made a 4 part 3D chassis for it which was better but never really raceable.

In the last week I redesigned the 3D chassis to take a resin 3D printed pod that I also designed and printed.  There was plenty of ground clearance (3mm) so fancied getting the piercing saw out and making a brass plate to hang underneath so some of the old and some of the new.  There's still 2mm ground clearance which complies with CSCRA rules for the era.

This has a SlotIt 21k boxer motor, nice and smooth.

Front and rear axle height can be adjusted with screws before fixing in place with a dab of glue.

I must admit I don't like the front wheels on this, they look too small in diameter and will change them some time in the future.

...first track test will be on Thurs night (it's Grand Prix + Prewing F1 this week)

The second GP reworked car is also a Mike Dove car, a Mercedes W154.  This one is a resin cast body which originally had a similar brass chassis/motor to the W25B.

Now sporting a two part 3D chassis, scaley green slimline motor (fitted at an incline to get perfect gearmesh) and ballast under the motor with added tungsten TIG rod glued to the sides of the rear chassis but extending forwards to the front axle.

Again 2mm ground clearance for CSCRA rules.

...this goes exceptionally well!  Checkeredflag

SCX Abarth 131

Good condition, sadly interior all superglued in with the sides of the bodyshell pushed in preventing the chassis fitting correctly which wasn't in the description Angry

Never mind, most things are fixable

Spare wheel was removed by the previous owner, an old scaley Mini wheel is prefect and the same style.

Not decided whether to upgrade it with alloys and 3D chassis or resurrect as near as standard but with better rear tyres.

Setting up a standard class Rally car takes at least twice as long as a fully upgraded car.

Agree, stock standard tuning is often the hardest

This car fell on it's roof seconds after being painted. Oops. Thank goodness a black vinyl roof was a common thing back in the 60's. The roof was painted yesterday.  Thumbup

Will it also get those chrome strips, which are so typical of cars from that time?

Hi Rallyhub,

Absolutely! It won't look right without them. Molotow chrome pen to the rescue!

This old car had lots of chrome window strips.

There has been some progress:
-the red GTam is almost finished, missing mirrors and apropriate inserts

it is fitted a (specially designed for narrow cars) chassis and motor pod which provide room for tyres 11,5 mm wide at the rear

With some ballast and a flat motor it is a very good car.
Next batch

All the cars have been clear coated
-Fiat coupe, paint the cockpit, put in place the lenses, print a drivers head
-Alfa Romeo GTam #6,paint the cockpit and grill, fit headlights, mirrors, and chassis to be completed with motor,axles.....In case you wonder  about the livery ,it is this car,1 of only 5 made for the US market, ended up racing in Greece with great success driven by the late George Moschous .If someone has a really heavy wallet it is fully restored and for sale in Athens by the current owner.

I may be one of the crowd watching the race from the truck

-Ferrari 250 GT lusso, design cockpit, glass, complete chasdsis and assembly
-Ferrari 350 needs painting decals, designing and printing a cockpit and assembly
the Ferrari 312p is the second version (sidewinder chassis),the first (in line motor pod to allow for more room for wider tyres at the rear)having been completed earlier

-The Saab is a repaint, all the pαrts are printed, just need assembly
