Resizing Photos
#1

Hi, I want to load some pics of my layout, but they are too big and I am being told I need to resize them.

Is there a way for the site to resize them automatically as I really dont want to have to do it every time I want to upload a photo

Yes, we can change the forum settings. Currently the limit for jpgs is 3Mb, but we can increase that. What size are your pictures?

Just under 5Mb.

They are taken on an Iphone, which I presume is a set size.

Currently does this mean that you couldn't upload directly from an Iphone either?

Woah...that is H U G E !! Cool

The pics I put up are around 350kB. It takes a few seconds to batch change the size of photos on the Mac. Don't know anything about an iPhone though.

I normally upload from my PC.

(I just mentioned the iphone because I am sure some people would upload from their phones.)

I'm sure on other sites whatever size photo you upload automatically gets resized to the allowable size for the site.

The forum does resize the images that you see in posts, otherwise we'd suffer from slow page loads. However, it leaves the original image intact and available by clicking on the smaller image.

I've now set the limit for jpgs at 6Mb, so you should be able to upload your photos.

To be honest though, images that big are of little use on the web, and you might actually save yourself time by converting them first using something like FastStone Photo Resizer which is free, and once you've set up your folders and sizes, it only takes a couple of clicks.

Thanks Jason, I'll give it a try and take a look at that resizing program.

For some clarity regarding phone photos, as an example my Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows phone has several settings for photos and I would assume (yup I'll risk it) other brands of phones would have similar settings, if I used the default image settings which are in HD with photos hitting 9Mb in size, not only this the default settings were actually takingg two photos of everything, one in HD and the other in low/space saving mode, easily under half that of the HD photos... when I saw this years ago I dialled back the image quality with various photos in the range from 2.5Mb up to 4.73Mb.

I would suggest folks go into their phone settings, camera and photos and have a squiz at what tweaks are available and have play, perhaps starting from the lowest quality and size and work your way through. You can save considerable room on the phone storage and the cloud also. With newer cameras and lenses available our photos will continue to grow in size and quality such as 4k and now 8k...
