Hello & Advice
#1

Hello

Just got back into slot cars as my son & I have recently started going to our local club. He's enjoying & I'm rediscovering my interest!

Found lots of my 90s (and my dad's 60s) kit from the loft. I've got a 90s gantry & light up chicane. Both have the old transformer connectors (two wires with hoops).

What's the best way to hook these up? Can I wire into newer kit? Would it be better to get old classic 12v transformer & run separately from track power? How many things can you hook up to then transformer?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jacob,

Welcome to SlotRacer.  Thumbup

What brand/type of equipment do you have? Got any pics?

Newer sets from the 90's often can't mix with older track from the 60's. The older tracks are often corroded and may need a lot of work.

Show us what you've got?

Hello and welcome aboard Jacob. Wavegreen

As you are just returning to the hobby I would strongly recommend a read of our manual LINK which covers most of the basics.

Re your specific queries on the chicane and gantry, these are best powered separately from your track. Any 12v plug in transformer will do, you don't need a specific Scalextric item for them.

Thanks!
Haven't got any pics yet. I'm looking at running these bits in with new stuff. The gantry & chicane are both Scalextric brand.
Looking to use with latest analogue Scalextric sets.

Thanks for the link, I shall have a read.

So run a old style transformer that the hoops can slot onto, plus the transformer running the set itself?

Would the chicane be an issue?
The modern analogue set my son has (the new KITT vs. BTTF Dalorian) is obviously being powered & adding in the chicane will be part of the electrical circuit. Would powering the that section of track with extra juice be an issue?

Appreciate advice.

Thanks to both for the warm welcome!

Hi and welcome on board.....

Reason for reequest for pics is to see what sort of tracks you have - even though it is all scalextric brand. Older and newer tracks have different joining connectors and thus may be an issue fitting in the older chicane with the new type of scalex track. In trerms of voltage, there should be no issue by adding some track. Issue occurs when you had a LOT of track - you get voltage drop in the area furthest from the transformer.

It is always better to add extra electrical items to a seperate transformer, so that amperage is not affected. When you have too much on a single transformer, one can see a decline in the performance of the cars to the point that when 2 cars are running, when one accelerates, it can cause the other to de-cellerate. The older type transformers where you wrap the wires around the external electrical points are fine to use.

(2nd-Dec-22, 08:27 AM)Thanks! Yeah these bits are old school, the hoopy click connection rather than the current male/female slot-in design. That\s OK though as I have a few convertion sections. Really useful understanding the transformer side of things. Thank you. Anthony B Wrote:  Hi and welcome on board.....
