Info 3d Printed Chassis & Bodies
#31

Number of projects cooking at the moment, one of which is the Hillman Imp. Thanks go to Alex Connell for letting me use his STL file of a standard Imp I have created a modified group 5 version as shown below (Pics courtesy of Danny from Avon Slot car club). This will be available soon with a AW S can chassis or IL S can chassis.

Also on the CAD a Schkee Lola CAN AM and Wolf Dallara both from the 1977 period, more on these soon.

To go with the generic F1 80s car we have a new body chassis kit for a F1 79 loosely based on the MRRC Lotus 79. This has a similar boxer IL chassis to the 80s car and comes with front & back wings plus a driver figure either resin or 3d printed.

Adding to the F1 boxer chassis options we have a pair of SCX cars Ferrari 87 and the Minardi using modified  chassis’ from the generic F1 range as below. These come with front & back wings as shown.

SCX (or Scalextric) Ferrari 87

SCX Minardi F1

More details on the FB page.

To cater for the GP racers, have developed a front motored chassis as shown below. Chassis is kept to the width of the FC130/S can motor and has a pivoting front axle guide assembly which is constrained and sprung by 2 piano wires as shown.

Track testing has shown the resin bodied car in the second picture performs well considering the narrow track and top weight. In the kit is 2 body posts, the chassis in 2 sections plus 2 pieces of piano wire for the suspension. This will be offered as a custom wheelbase option i.e. >65mm to @90mm as each chassis can be adjusted in CAD before printing.

During the lock down been busy with developing body shells and related items and been a bit slack on updating the forum page. So below is a catch up on shells and a kit that are ready now or we are currently working on (regular updates on the FB page).
(Sorry ABIE321 no 512 or Ti22 yet …………..)

Wolf Dallara

To go with the Schkee Lola we have the Wolf Dallara from the late 70s period. This comes with a IL or AW chassis options using the Boxer or S Can motors, available now.

Jaguar XKR14

The intention was just to create a chassis for the SCX Jaguar in the background, but started doodling and created a shell as well……………. Again this will have a vac formed screen, W.I.P. currently to refine the shape and sort out glazing. Chassis options are the usual AW & IL boxer/S Can.

Mitsubishi 3000GT

Created a racing version based on an X mod road car shell, this is available now with AW/IL chassis’ with solid windows as shown and will create vac form glazing for it later.

Scalex XRi Group 5 conversion kit.

Another one of those moments where the mind visualises how a tatty Scalex XR3i much abused over the last 30 odd years could be resurrected. This has a AW S can chassis, group 5 arches new front dam and rear wing plus a new grill all part of the kit with the chassis. Available now.

Scalex Porsche 911 rear spoiler.

Yet again another design doodle to improve upon the tea tray ‘Forth Bridge’ rear spoiler on the old Scalex shell. This can be screwed to the original and then trimmed to suit individual taste as shown on a customers car with our JS chassis. Available now.

Group 5 Hillman Imp lightweight interior

As part of the learning curve on the vac former tried my hand at making a pattern for Imp interior and then playing around with the process and the pattern to get it to form. Working with some old polystyrene sheet so far just trying things out but generally pleased with the progress so far as shown below.

More items on the go currently.

Below is the XR3i Group 5 body conversion kit fully painted on the Scalex XR3i (Cheers Nigel for the pics).

This kit is available now see the FB page.

And following on from this by the simple expedient of filling in the gap between the conversion kit arches we have a complete Group 5 XR3i printed shell and its baby brother the XR2i.

Both are work in progress as refining the print and wish to offer vac form glazing for both cars and a light weight vac formed interior.

Something for the scratchbuilder. Below is a idea developed by Danny from Avon Slot car club for a GP chassis using 3d printed pod and front axle assy taken from a busted chassis. Building on the idea and with Danny's input came up with a kit for the scratch builder in pic 2.

Below is the CAD for the design showing a motor pod (S can/FC130 Can drive) with fixing points at each end the front end have an extended tab so as to give some flex depending on which fixing point used. The front axle assy has 4 mounting points, and accepts a choice of guide holders which set the guide height. Kit includes 12 body posts in pairs at various heights, and 2 chassis posts. There is a 2nd version available for the FF050 slimline motor.
